That's about it. Best forgotten.

I like the idea of a relaunch of The Rani. just because the character was dodgey in the 80's does't mean she couldn't be written as an interesting antagonist in the new incarnation of the show. We had Romana as the only other Time Lady and she was pretty much in the Doctors shadow. I think it would be great to have a female evil genius who isn't bonkers but actually a force to be reckoned with. A real vixen

As for Drax, yes it should be revealed that Frank Skinners Perkins has a pocket watch.

Barely anyone wants her back, the Rani's shit.

Michelle Gomez was a great Master, the best person to play this character who - quite unlike the Rani, and quite crucially to the story - nigh-idolised the Doctor. They made the right choice... but I'm sure John Simm would be delighted with the esteem in which you held the shape of his genitals.

If they bring her back they should really bring her back as a man just to annoy the ones who keep asking for her return

I honestly think it is time that any mention of the Rani gets dumped into its own thread; or maybe its own forum.

I'm willing to bribe Mods to make this happen.

No person, other than Moffat or the usual "jokey style" tabloid stories, has ever bigged up a female Doctor before. Moffat is obsessed by the subject. He couldn't even leave it alone in the final scenes when Clara said "You could be King of Gallifrey......or Queen!" That was a totally unnecessary line.

I hope that the next showrunner, whilst having the possibility, declines the temptation. It really is OTT just how much Moffat goes on about it.

The next showrunner Script scenario:

Missy: Oh Doctor, wouldn't you like to be a girl? I've often wondered what it would be like, and I must say, it's fabulous!
Doctor: I'm more than happy being a boy! I'm still getting used to having two of everything! Besides, as I'm half human on my mother's side, changing gender is impossible for me. I have limited regeneration capabilities so I'm stuck as a bloke whether I like it or not!

End of debate!

Since when did everyone want the Rani back?
She was never a particularly interesting villain and the stories she was in weren't the finest Doctor Who has to offer (far from it).

I don't believe that for a secind.

A character can only be unpopular with those who have actually heard of them.

Yep, that's what my first suspicion was/ is too.

As per what someone else said -its all part of the political correctness now built into the show. If it's not a female Doctor in the next 5 years, I'm expecting a Muslim companion.

I think the choice of the actress (is it okay to still say that or am I supposed to say "female actor" or simply "actor"-?) is a brilliant one for Missy -she is soo good in the role and scary. As I've said before there's nothing wrong in the casting department -they are top notch.

I'm in two minds about casting her as the Rani though. Reason: the original character was, well, cmon let's be honest -pretty ordinary. I think what you would find is a reverse thread resulting here -"oww she is good but why didn't they try & cast her as a female Master rather than a 2nd rate character like the Rani that first appeared when the original series was well past its prime?"

With the classic fans she was very unpopular

With the new fans she is so insignificant that she's unknown

Because most modern fans of the show neither know nor care who or what The Rani is.

Because the Rani is not just a female version of the Dr as everyone keeps thinking, she has completely different ideas and motivations, she was never that interested in chaos and in conquering the universe/earth, she was interested in science, in creating something that was scientifically ground breaking and in pushing boundaries and would do anything in search of that goal, anyway the Rani is back...

Sarah Jane K9 and The Master even none fans knew who they were as they were always very popular

Everything else they are aliens so all different people so they don't have to keep the same back story and and everything else

All that girly, flirty, kissy stuff would've been totally out of character for the Rani.

It was still pretty out of character for the Master, but it would've been even worse from her. She was more the "ruthless pragmatist" type.

A very very small minority of vocal fans want her back the rest of us want her buried in the 80s where she belongs. And the average viewer would have no idea who she is. It ain't gonna happen

But this is my point the new female master would be exactly the same as the rani. So why would they need to be buried in the 80's

No they were very different characters who both just happened to be Time Lords that's like saying The Doctor and Romana are the same just because they are both Time Lords

Perhaps the lack of appetite for a Rani revival is connected with the poor reputation of the McCoy era from whence she hailed?

Seriously? No they wouldn't, no-one knows who she is. Christ, the Zygons in the 50th anniversary weren't even remotely part of the draw for most of the audience, they wouldn't have even known it was a returning villain.

For the Rani, they'd have to almost begin again, not some big reveal that has 90% of the viewers asking 'the who?'

Ice Warriors, Autons, Macra, Zygons, none of these were made as big reveals like Missy at the end, or like the Daleks at the end of Bad Wolf, or the Cybermen at the end of Rise of the Cybermen (and even then it's not a surprise, its in the damn episode name).

Very few of the classic characters are well known. The Master and the Daleks are really the only well known villains, with the Cybermen quite far behind in 3rd, Sontarans somewhere way off in 4th, whilst Sarah Jane and K9 are the most well known companions, and even they weren't some big reveal, they were shown at the beginning of their episodes.

If you brought back people like Leela, or Romana, or Ace, the majority of the modern viewership wouldn't know who they were, or perhaps vagely. Same with the Rani or the Meddling Monk or the Valeyard, the viewers aren't going to know them. Not saying you can't bring them back, of course you can, but you can't make it the big grand twist reveal like you could with the Master.
