I'm thinking about buying a new 4K TV very early next year but am confused as I've read that no 'standard' has been agreed for 4K and a set bought now or in the near future may not be able to receive 4K transmissions when they happen.
I appreciate that there is no 4K content to watch at the moment (or I don't think there is) but I'm hoping that a decent set from Samsung or LG will last me 5 years and I will therefore get the benefit of being able to watch 4K transmissions.
Would it be a mistake to buy 4K at the moment or is there a set out there that is 'future proof'? I don't want to buy a pig in a poke! Would I be better off buying a quality HD TV? I would hate to buy one of those and then discover that I could have gone with 4K after all.

Well HDMI 2.0 cable seems to be the only " standard " to be agreed, yet there is 4K TV's that have HDMI 1.4 just now

If you are happy with your tv just now, it might be worthwhile hanging on until 8K comes out .......................

Or certainly a better indication on what content of material will be out there.

What the broadcasters are likely to Transmit may not get through HDMI 2.0 either!
They are wanting to get things right - and not be forced by the CE industry as they were over HD..
and to really give you a WOW and realistic Picture!

SO wait .. about two years!

(BTW similar issue affect Films!)

Thanks for the replies and advice guys. I get the impression that my best course of action would be to buy a decent HD set and wait a few years to see how 4K sorts itself out.
