Just seems crazy to me

Good looking girls quite ok in a 5 member group but as a solo artist, very, very lucky to be where she is.

OK performer but very below par & average vocal

But I guess if you're ok with kissing simon cowells ass for the rest of your career then fair play I guess

It just shows that you dont have to be a good singer to do well, unfortunately.

When you think of all the great female singers there have been in the UK, this is all pretty depressing really, and makes a mockery of what good music is supposed to be about.

it is five number ones to go straight in at number 1.

Not five number 1's

Cheryl Whatever Her Surname Is This Week has entered the "Safety Stage" of the music industry.

Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters/Nirvana fame had previously spoke of this in general. Said when artists get to a certain stage it really doesn't matter what they release (Mentioned names like Elton John, Madonna).

He said people will still buy material from these names even if the single/album is absolute garbage simply because of the name attatched to it. "They are a fan of them so its a case of I have to buy it, doesn't matter whether its an insult to their hearing or not"

Seems pretty spot on to me

Which these days takes a hell of a lot less sales than it used to .

Indeed.
Plus, she did have the kick start of previously being in a successful group.
She has an inbuilt fan base.

I think her voice is incredibly weak, I actually find some notes very hard on the ears.
Her songs are catchy though.

It's a bit of a shame, imo, that such a poor vocalist now holds this accolade.

Where they were lauding it on the show to me they should all be a bit embarrassed that such a poor vocalist holds this record and how poor the charts have become

If it's true that Adam Lambert is to appear on the show, she would be shown up no end if she chose to perform.
Trading on past successes imo - not to mention the continuing publicity from the X Factor.

No she must be a good singer, she beat the legendary Geri Halliwell

A classic example of style triumphing over substance. Symptomatic of the vacuous society we live in these days I'm afraid.

Ah I see - that makes more sense.

Agree.

No I don't think it is worse at all. Songs go straight in at No1 all the time now because of pre-sales. It was much harder to go straight in at No1 previously - most songs had to work their way up the charts. And then still many of them only got into the top 5 bacause they ran out of steam! But the over all sales were numbers that Cheryl could only dream of.

Take Madonna for instance - over 10 No1s and way many more hits (that everyone knows and are still played today) which only made top 5.

Given the amount of promotion her singles have it's not entirely surprising. I have a sneaking suspicion that all five of her number ones had been previously been performed on either X Factor, Britain's Got Talent or The Voice.

So the promotion, her media presence, radio plays and the fact they're rather catchy songs, it's not surprising she's done this well. It's only a shame that more talented female artists, of which there are many, haven't achieved the same.

Cheryl's latest has sold 82,000.

Mr blobby sold 576,000.

Much much easier to get to no 1 these days

No its not, she has the most number 1's by a British Female full stop I think. Nowhere on the official charts article does it mention 'to debut at number 1'.

Quote:
“In doing so, the singer now holds the record for the most UK Number 1s for a British female artist”

http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-...ont-care-3270/

Simon said 'to debut' on the show, but he was wrong.

It's a shame she got the record with her worst single to date, but she is still deserving of it, yes she's not a great singer but she is a great pop star and she has had great singles in the past! I'd much rather Cheryl, who has been in the Industry for 12 years have that record than Rita Ora who has 4 number ones, and has only been out a few years.

No it's not. It's the most #1 singles for a BRITISH female! It has nothing to do with where the song debuts, but its overall peak.

It is common for songs to go straight in at No 1 these days.

Um, no. Thanks to the digital era, singles sales are higher than before (and albums the opposite). Ten years ago (2004-2005) you could sell 30,000 copies & hit #1, whereas that figure is about tripled nowadays.

And yet still a far cry from the late 90's and earlier. Heck even Mr blobby managed over 500k sales!!!

Yes, what people forget as well is the fact that Cheryl is such a great performer and looks so good and she's what all young girls aspire to. Basically Cheryl has the whole package and she can sing but just not the greatest singer. Plus the majority of her songs are catchy and good dance songs so really appeals to the younger generation.
