The previous record was apparently Geri Halliwell with 4. She can't really sing either but she had a big profile and lots of publicity

Yes, what people forget as well is the fact that Cheryl is such a great performer and looks so good and she's what all young girls aspire to. Basically Cheryl has the whole package and she can sing but just not the greatest singer. Plus the majority of her songs are catchy and good dance songs so really appeals to the younger generation.
I sincerely hope not!

And yet still a far cry from the late 90's and earlier. Heck even Mr blobby managed over 500k sales!!!
That's a ridiculous comparison considering that the Mr Blobby song is one of the bestselling of all time. Obviously it's going to have enormous sales, doesn't mean that it's representative of the music industry. It's like saying "Taylor Swift sold 1.3 million in a week back in 2014. The album sales must've been much higher in them days", but in reality, the majority of US #1 albums don't clear 200k.

No, she really isn't
You're 44 years old. What makes you think that you even have the faintest idea of what young girls of the 21st generally aspire to be like? lmao

That's your opinion, I suggest you find out then who buys her downloads and her records. With 80,000 odd sales somebody is buying them!!!!!!!! You cannot take her 5 number 1s straight in away from Cheryl as much as you might like to!

No, it;s not my opinion how every many explanation marks you use. You actually said
she's what all young girls aspire to
which blatantly isn't true. Most girls aspire to be something a little more worthwhile

Actually it's 97 on the top 100 selling singles of the 90s.

Even Peter Andre with mysterious girl managed 750k.

Singles get to no 1 much easier these days. It is a fact. They sell less and it's possible to get a no 1 on streaming alone even.

Cheryl is just mediocre. no real talent there.

Getting to number one isn't that hard these days.
You dont have to sell that many.

Good for her. I've always liked her records She's a pop Artiste and she makes great pop records imho. If I'm in a club and the dj drops a track that makes me want to dance. I don't worry about how the track was created. If I can dance to it and enjoy it that's good enough for me

Cheryl Whatever Her Surname Is This Week has entered the "Safety Stage" of the music industry.

Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters/Nirvana fame had previously spoke of this in general. Said when artists get to a certain stage it really doesn't matter what they release (Mentioned names like Elton John, Madonna).

He said people will still buy material from these names even if the single/album is absolute garbage simply because of the name attatched to it. "They are a fan of them so its a case of I have to buy it, doesn't matter whether its an insult to their hearing or not"

Seems pretty spot on to me
It's not really true though is it? (As much as I love Dave). Looked at the career of Madonna (13 no1s) or Kylie (7 no1s), the most consistently successful female artists in the uk over the last 30 years. Neither have released big hit singles for years, madonnas completely tanked from her last album, and kylie struggled to no12 with 'into the blue' fairly recently (although both their albums had high chart peaks - they fell quickly). Their comes a time when the fans get older and buying music becomes less of a priority. Both artists will also sell huge amounts of tour tickets, but I can't see either ever having a no1 singles ever again. Cheryl is younger and fresher, although I can't see her ever having the longevity of either madge or kylie.

No song has ever got to no1 on streaming alone and it will almost certainly NEVER happen. 100 streams count as 1 sale and, given that the average no1 sells around 70k in one week, it would take 7 million in one week to reach no1. Given that the highest streamed song has done 1.4million in one week (14000 sales) it is possible to go top 40 on streaming alone, but nowhere near the top 10.

Just seems crazy to me

Good looking girls quite ok in a 5 member group but as a solo artist, very, very lucky to be where she is.

OK performer but very below par & average vocal

But I guess if you're ok with kissing simon cowells ass for the rest of your career then fair play I guess
Well there you go. It proves that getting on in the industry has nothing to do with talent.

The 97th bestselling song of the last decade (Mercy) has sold more than that Mr Blobby song.
It's not even possible to reach the top 10 on streaming alone. The highest ever streaming week was the chart equivalent of ~15,000 sales.

The singles chart is about as relevant as the League Cup is in football nowadays. A sort of quaint anachronism that soldiers on despite fact vast majority of populous has no idea about it anymore.

Well, Geri managed to hold on to the record for 13 years. Not too Shabby.
Although Geri's four number ones were consecutive.

So she still holds the record for the UK female artist with the most consecutive number ones!

Anyway with eleven number ones alltogether, I believe she's still the UK female to have appeared on more than any other.

Indeed.
Plus, she did have the kick start of previously being in a successful group.
She has an inbuilt fan base.

I think her voice is incredibly weak, I actually find some notes very hard on the ears.
Her songs are catchy though.

It's a bit of a shame, imo, that such a poor vocalist now holds this accolade.
No worse than Geri Halliwell who previously held the record.

Cheryl has been a hugely successful popstar for twelve years; she totally deserves this record.

Considering the people she has "beaten" to the record are Geri Halliwell and Rita Ora, I dont think it's an indicator of massive musical success.

Plus I've heard rumours that music publications have been told they are not allowed to review her album lower than 5/10 or 3/5

This isn't a fact. Single sales are higher than ever before.

I bet she's only sold a fraction of the amount of albums that Adele has.

Why is Cheryl's solo career so much more successful than Nicola's or Nadine's (I'm not aware of Sarah or Kimberley releasing solo stuff)?

Because she was the chosen one, and cowell knew it and thought he better get in there first.

And Kimberly had an album out this year actually: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centre_...ey_Walsh_album)

Made it to #18

How could Geri's four CONSECUTIVE number ones as a solo act and eleven number ones with the Spice Girls not be considered 'Massive'?
