I want to be able to put a video on a USB and play it. I don't want to have to transfer it to a NAS hard drive as well. I currently plug my laptop into the tv, and am looking for a simpler option.
Example http://www.7dayshop.com/products/7da...DLGCEB,AQRKU,1 It has composite out so will connect to a TV with a scart socket. (You may need an adaptor like this one) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RGB-Scart-...item565e8883de |

Plenty of small media players will do this.

You don't mention the origin of the mkv and mp4 files you want to play and nobody seems to have asked about this. These are not universal file formats and actually vary with the encoder. So not all playback devices will play every version, e.g. you might get a picture w/o sound, or vice versa, or nothing even if the box claims to play mkv and mp4 files. Best bet is probably a media player as just suggested, not a DVD or Bluray player.
