Even if there wasn't a ban against depicting him, Muhammad took a nine year old wife which would make him a bad person to a lot of the audience.

If that is true then you can make a potential link with what was going on in Rotherham perhaps?

^Aisha was 6yrs old when Muhammad married her: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aisha Though one tradition holds she was 9 when he consummated.

^Oh the link is quite blatant... though media discussion of it is restricted for obvious reasons.
In fact, obligation to imitate Muhammad (known as practicing Sunnah) is the source of many issues.

For example, in April 2012, the Muslim Brotherhood tried to pass a Fatwa (legal judgment) that allowed husbands in Egypt to have 'farewell intercourse' with their wives 6 hours after death.
Their justification was a hadith (in the Kanz al-'Umal) in which Muhammad took off his shirt, placed it on a dead woman and "lay with her" in her grave. The gravediggers exclaimed, "O Prophet, we see you doing a thing you never did with anyone else," to which Muhammad responded: "I have dressed her in my shirt so that she may be dressed in heavenly robes, and I have laid with her in her grave so that the torments of the grave may be alleviated from her."

^In other words, saving her soul through post-death sex...
Yeah, on second thoughts... Necrophiliac... Pedophile... Polygamist... Slaver and Warlord... perhaps Muhammad isn't a suitable subject for Doctor Who after all!

^LOL!
Can you imagine if they incorporated that into 'Dark Water'?
"Your body can still feel things after death... I hope you didn't arrange to be cremated Madam?"
"Worse! That dirty perv Mo is 'lying' with my corpse!!"

I am certain I remember a 4th Doctor story where he met Leonardo Da Vinci?

Something about (possibly) the Master commissioning dozens of copies of the Mona Lisa for himself, and the Doctor writing 'This is a Fake' with a black felt pen on the blank canvases, then telling Leonardo to paint over it ???

It was a long time ago so I might be mistaken .....

It's City of Death you're think of (No Master though).

The Doctor travels back to Davinci's studio but doesn't actually meet him IIRC.

It is stated that they had met before.

There is also a reference in The Masque of Mandragora, I think he spends some time in Da Vinci's studio?

But you are thinking of City of Death

Oh, terrible what he did, wasn't it? Resurrect a completely dead franchise, give it credibility, establish a strong foundation for a global brand... Perish the thought, huh?

I seem to remember a previous thread about historical things. Although the pyramid builders were featured way back in ye olden tymes, I'd like to see some ancient Egyptian stuff now that we know so much more than to think of them as slaves (the Nefertiti thing doesn't really count as Egyptian, for fairly obvious reasons and what a waste of a character). There are legends about the pharaohs becoming one of the immortals (another word for stars in the sky) after death: how did that happen, then? If we're talking the Great Pyramid, that would be Khufu then (although how many actually know his name?). Or the designer of the first pyramid, Imhotep (not to be confused with resurrected mummy priest Imhotep). OK, it's getting a bit esoteric now.

One of the great things about some of the early purely historical stories were that they gave an added dimension to the time travelling dilemma. It was established early on that some things were unchangeable and that no matter what they did, history would pretty much 're-set' around them (as in 'Aztecs' and 'Reign of Terror').

Some of the episodes set on the fringe of real history have been fun, too (like 'Romans' and maybe 'Visitation', so long as you don't take it all seriously, or 'Fires of Pompeii' which I don't think is without its merits), without incorporating real historical characters.

Apologies for my failing memory .... I'm getting on, you know!

I don't have any DVDs and am relying on memory alone from the original transmission ...

With the exception of a handful of episodes I abhor his era. Glib, juvenile propaganda.

Doctor Who has always had a bit of an alienist agenda in all eras, in fairness.

Some good choices there, but the Emperor Nero has already featured in a First Doctor story entitled "The Romans".

Jack the Ripper, I quite like the idea of the Doctor failing to prevent something

Robin Hood does count and his story was told in the fun way it should've been.

I could picture Joan of Arc in a truly awesome adventure if she had the chance.

L Ron Hubbard would be very interesting. Might be a bit controversial though. I Wonder what the Doctor's view of Scientology is!

(I could hazard a guess.)

Alan Turing would be a good one if we can get the guy who played Winston Churchill back as well, with some good witty plays on mathematics to show the Dr does know his stuff and maybe even a swift kiss on the cheek to show that the Dr knows of Alan's highly illegal sexuality but the Dr don't care...in fact he could take him to today and show him that he gets pardoned as well

now what sort of villans could we have for the show?

Taken from 'Carry On Doctor' where Peter Capaldi hams it up as The Doctor is possessed by the spirit of Kenneth Williams.

Reminds me a bit of Mr Tennant as Cassandra in 'New Earth'. Vicar.

I'd like to see a 'Troy'-style adventure - possibly a two-part epic! NO sci-fi involved at all!
Just The Doctor and his two companions braving the romans etc. I don't think we've had a non-sci-fi story since the 80's! It does work - now and again for a change.

^I have to agree.
While credit has to be given to RTD for reviving the franchise, it got off to a very shaky start.
Series 1 is nearly unwatchable.
I recently introduced some friends to DW and they kept asking me "when does this get good?".
'Empty Child'/'Doctor Dances' was the first episode they (and I) actually enjoyed, and that was, of course, written by Moffat.

^99% of the British public frowned on man/man love back then.
But since 'Society' isn't a very tangible villain, I suppose the secret service should be the human villains. The aliens could be good for once. Perhaps some gay aliens could help Turing?
