I recently bought myself a cocktail shaker and have been looking up cocktails. Almost all of them talk of 1/4 ounce, or 1/2 ounce or 1 1/2 ounces etc. of this and that. I can obviously simply follow the proportions with my measure - one measure, two measures etc - but that tends to make for quite a lot of cocktail and as it's only me drinking it, it can be a bit much. My measure has 25 and 50ml markings. What would, say, 1/2 ounce equate to in mls?

1 oz is about 30ml. UK shots are 5ml smaller than US ones (25ml vs 30ml).

Thanks, that's very helpful, don't know what I would have done without your great advice. And you'll find a pretty good definition of 'smartarse' in most English dictionaries.
