Jon Bentley from The Gadget Show, report on incorrect facts about BT Youview
Did anyone watch the Jon Bentley comparison report on the Gadget Show this week about BT Youview. Jon did another comparison between BT Youview, Sky and Virgin packages and what you can get for around £50, the report was based on the tv, PVR, router and broadband. I don't have an issue with the Gadget Show itself I actually like it, but I find Jon Bentley's reporting inaccurate and very biased and misleading.
But the amount of facts he left out of what you get with BT Youview and the Homehub 5 and packages was appalling and very poor. When all the same information was left in with the Sky and Virgin hardware in the report. He clearly left out the specification information of the Homehub 5 even though the Virgin router had the same specs with 2.4 & 5ghz wifi and 4 gigabit ports (a big error was labelling the BT router to "record 50 hours of HD"). It's a shame he also didn't mention that you can record 2 channels and watch a 3rd with a twin tuner box as he mentioned about the 3 tuners in the Virgin PVR's. Then he stated that you can get Sky Sports 1 & 2 on a Youview box which everyone knows isn't correct as there has only just been a court ruling to tell Sky to allow it, but isn't available yet. Don't they check the facts before broadcasting. He also left out with the Youview box but included in the Sky and Virgin PVR's was remote recording not even mentioning the Youview TV guide and remote record app. The same thing happened with the on demand functionality on the BT PVR. One correct fact was you don't get as many channels and to watch programs on the go on Youview (other than BT Sport) like you do on Sky and Virgin. But you could just download other apps to do that. But the best incorrect fact was saying about BT Infinity part of his package implying that because it wasn't unlimited like on Sky's ADSL and Virgin's big kahuna bundle. That the BT TV IP channels and content would be limited as you only have a 20GB a month limit which is nonsense. BT isn't perfect but giving incorrect facts in a report and being biased doesn't do The Gadget Show any favors. |

Sounds about as accurate and misleading as their previous report of Freeview, Youview, and Freesat boxes, although Youview didn't mind that one as they came out favourably that time.

Which day was this shown? I'd like to see the report via catch-up if the programme is available.

Darren ![]() On a vaguely related note: are programmes on Demand Five available in HD on YouView? Only wondered because the Five network of linear channels have always only been available in SD. Shows how much I've used Demand Five! |
