I really didn't like Simon's AT

I loved the production, I loved Kristina, I loved the music, I loved the lifts.

BUT

I didn't think he had enough Tango content. Most of it was Kristina dancing around him (I know that's a lot of what the AT is, even when Vincent and Flavia did it, but you could see Vincent actually doing something during their routines!)

He minced up to her, he's supposed to be a manly Argentinean labourer.

His upper body was so wooden, when the entire point of the Argentine Tango compared to the Ballroom Tango is the fluidity compared to the very staccato Ballroom variant.

And, most unpopular opinion of them all...

I thought it was the worst dance of the night :/ (Yes, even worse than Judy's!)

I didn't think it was worse than Judy's, but bar the final move, left me totally unaffected! I think he benefited from 3 things: having the first AT this year, having the best AT dancer in SCD (after Vincent & Flavia, obvs) and the 'Blackpool effect'. It's been a long time since a celeb's AT enthralled me mind you, as much as I love the dance... last duo might have been Karen Hardy & Ramps, you know!

I thought it was good BUT first thing I said to my brother was that Kristina did all the work did not think it would be marked so high for what it was - but it wasnt the only dance overmarked I thought it was top 3 or 4 though

I thought it was really good but not as good as some others (Harry especially and Mark)

I'd love to hear you explain how you thought Simon's dance was worse than Judy's skippy, illegal-lifty Viennese Waltz and Sunetra's car crash of a Samba - not being sarcastic, I'm genuinely quite intrigued.

No, don't merge it. Let the people who liked the dance have their thread without them having grumps like me ruining their enjoyment. But this thread can be for people to discuss who don't think it was quite as good as the judges made out to be :/

I agree, I think there have been a few that made me go "wow"- maybe Kara and Artem's, but Mark and Karen's is still the best one yet. Annoyed that Harry Judd and Jason Donovan technically have the "best ATs in Strictly History, they were so much worse than Ramps'!

I'm so glad it wasn't just me! I don't think it was the only one over marked, but definitely the most over marked :/

I don't think it was the worst dance of the night but other than that I agree with you...and Craig.

Because, for the 15-20 seconds she actually did Viennese Waltz, Judy did a very good Waltz. I admit, the rest of it left a lot to be desired, but at least she did some dancing. Same with Sunetra, she had an awful lot of Samba content in there. Kristina did all of the work for this AT :/

Let me rephrase what I mean by "worst dance"

Judy is clearly less talented than Simon.
Sunetra clearly a less smooth routine than Simon.

But they actually danced. Simon did very little, and what he did wasn't very Argentinean Tango-y :/

Oddly enough, I was only thinking earlier that Judy out-danced Jake tonight.

I don't think he has the fluidity for a passable Ballroom routine. Had that been anybody else, Len would have pointed out how little of the routine was spent in hold. And it was anything but Smooth.

I agree, it was nowhere near the standard of those (or Kara's, or Alesha's, or Rachel's...I could go on).

But in the context of a generally hugely underwhelming series it is one of my current highlights!

I can understand it not being people's favourite dance of the night (though it was mine), but I don't think there's any cause for saying it was worse than Sunetra or Judy, both of whom were severely lacking in the technical, timing and performance departments!

As far as unpopular opinions go though, my opinion on Caroline's jive is very similar to the OP's opinion on Simon's AT - I have no clue why it scored so highly, I thought it was pretty poor!

Agreed- Jake's dance was predominantly drama, not enough "Smooth" but I did enjoy it more than Judy's (and I'm by no means a Jake fan...)

Simon's dance, however... :/

I don't think it was the worst dance of the night, but for me it was a series of technically very well-executed moves but without an ostensible plot or building of intensity, which the best ATs have. Not enough drama and sweaty pampers for me.

Glad some people agree - it left me cold. Couldn't even begin to understand what all the fuss was about! I would say he was better than Judy or Sunetra, but to have him joint top with Pixie after getting 3 10s was ridiculous IMO - an 8 would have been plenty generous enough!

I was also underwhelmed by Caroline and I was willing her to be the best.

The only dance that wowed me tonight was pixie's

Btw I agree with all your examples of great ATs but I was going for males for the direct comparison.

It's obviously a tricky dance for males to shine in but both Aliona and Karen managed to showcase their partners, in solo movements.

No passion, no intensity, not a smoulder in sight.

I like Simon - he's a nice boy, but he ain't no man.

I'm not a fan of the Argentine tango in general and I didn't like this one at all.

Way over marked in my opinion.

Assuming this is about the merger comment, thank you. It's absolutely fine. As a Pixie fan, it really annoys me when the detractors come along when someone's praising her routine, so I wouldn't want to do the same to Simon's fans, or even fans of this one dance! I know every now and again we all throw a spanner in the works one way or the other with a provocative post, but on the whole, it's nice just to have a discussion rather than an argument

My mind wanders when they come on anyway. I'm not a fan of AT and Darcy is getting sillier every week. I preferred watching her when she danced - at least she didn't speak!

I don't like Kristina' s AT choreography on the whole so was pleasantly surprised by this one as it was not as dreadful as Jason's for example.

Having said that I certainly didn't think it was worth the 10 I am with the OP in that Simon benefited greatly from the Kristina distraction tactics.

I also enjoyed Judys better, but have to say I really did think she was the worst dancer of the night no Simon.

Except for the ending which didn't have anything to do with AT but was still a cute bit of drama it didn't do much for me. There wasn't enough body contact and even for a Strictly AT it felt more staged than usual: 7/10
