Amazing Television Deal:

I was shopping in our local Tesco on Friday and saw that they have an amazing offer on for a television, they were selling a 40" Blaupunkt Freeview HD television for £199.00 I have not bought any Blaupunkt equipment so do not know what the quality of their goods but I feel it really is amazing how the price of 40" sets have come down in price and not only 40" but Freeview HD as well.

I think the 32" Tevion television I purchased from Aldi around 2007/8 was a good deal and that was I think £299.99 for just Freeview so the Blaupunkt that Tesco have really is amazing.

Sadly pretty well all the former quality makers have long been bought out by cheap companies that rebadge cheap (and nasty) TV's that get deservedly terrible reviews.

If you want a great picture at that sort of price point look for a quality HD Ready set from Sony or Panasonic (or Samsung if the price is attractive).

You will get what you pay for,

It may be Freeview HD (capable of tuning the HD channels) but more importantly I would check the display is full HD (1920x1080). It's not unknown for cheaper sets to just have an HD-ready display, ie. anything else above SD (720x576)

Which probably doesn't matter too much, the quality is usually far more important than the resolution.

A minimum of 720 lines but all newer sets have 768 lines. A decent HD Ready set will knock the spots off a crap full-HD panel like you get with makes like Vestel etc (supermarket specials - yuk).

I bought a 39" set (without Freeview HD) two years ago for £190, with 5-year warranty.

Good deal but the price is more or less par for the course now -- I've seen 39/40" sets going for £159 recently.

When you get down to this level you should ignore the brand name and buy ruthlessly on price -- it makes no difference what you buy if its outside the 'big 4' (Sony/Panasonic/Samsung/LG) at the cheap end of the market (the like of Philips, Sharp and Toshiba do produce decent sets at higher prices but at sub-£200 they will all be cheap badge jobs).

FWIW the £190 set referred to above (an M&S-branded Cello) has been fine, and when fed an HD source has good image quality, albeit not terribly bright.
