Reasons for:

He knew the Doctor and Jenna had left on bad terms, kinda like he had been spying/watching on them (On an ipad perhaps) like Missy watched them

We've seen one timelord escape Gallifrey, maybe a few more are being written to get the Doctor more curious about where Gallifrey is, he could give the same co-ordinates as Missy

When he is talking to Clara, they are standing next to a ceiling window that's shaped a like a .... TARDIS console ....

Reasons against:

This idea is kinda sucky and its too soon after revealing another timelord

Why would Santa be a timelord?

Probably Not.

The Doctor has hung around with someone he claims is Santa Claus before (though the Doctor calls him Jeff).

If the Doctor knew there was another Time Lord hanging around on Earth all this time why was the Doctor always claiming to be the last of his Kind.

Santa is probably alien and may well use Time Lord Tech (Sack bigger on the inside) but I don't believe he's a Time Lord.

Of course if Jeff and the Santa in the upcoming episode are not actually the same character then all bets are off.

I'm not sure that that is the case, but I can see it working:

1. He can do a LOT in one night.
2. His sack is dimensionally transcendental.
3. 11 said that he knew Santa as Jeff (Not exactly a Time Lord name, but a name nonetheless). An old mate from Gallifrey?
4. 9 told Rose that he was Santa... In a previous regeneration, maybe, before the job went to someone else?

All that said, why would Time Lords bother to be a mythical figure for Earthlings? It makes sense for the Doctor to hold the title for a while I suppose, but why would anyone else bother?

Interesting point there is something going on. CIN clip shown last friday was probably early on before it all kicks off. Does 12 help Santa or stop him ?. Doubt they will turn him into a villain but there must be a good reason or reasons why 12 wanted Clara away from him. Said he knew what was at stake. So if he lets Santa go ahead there will be a price to pay. How high ?. Looking forward to it anyway.

Firstly, I am really happy to see Father Christmas in Christmas special. I always wanted him, but never believed it will actually happen.
As for time lord, well, it deffinitely sounds like an interesting idea. I really hope we will have some imaginative explanation. Or maybe it should partially stay as mistery

I hope he turns out to be the rani!
LOOOL!! After Missy being the Master I wouldn't be suprised.

Although there is nothing concrete in what we've already seen to suggest it, the idea seems totally possible and plausible to me. In fact if they did want to go down that route, there are a number of elements already in the santa mythology which mean that in many ways the idea writes itself such as -

Sack bigger on the inside

The fact that santa's workshop is often shown as a small hut outside but a big workshop inside could easily mean it's his TARDIS

he's generally perceived to have lived for 100's of years

Can get around the whole world in one night (time travel)

The name SANTA CLAUS. neither element of that name is a common earth name, and sounds like it could easily more be a title.

So yes, I can see it. I think if they did it they should probably say he was a Timelord who left gallifrey many years ago like the doctor so was in no way involved/affected by the timewar or timelock. Even when in the past the doctor has said there are no other timelords around could be explained as him knowing about santa but automatically discounting him in his head, knowing that he is a recluse who likes to get on with his good work and dosen't like to be bothered by other timelords.

Father Christmas is the Doctor because there's nothing to say that the Doctor can't regenerate into Father Christmas

I was going to say that he's got to fit being Merlin in at some point but looking it up I see the 8th Doctor took care of that bit of business in a book.

I know you probably posted this as a joke, but I wouldn't mind them saying that santa is actually one of the doctors far future regenerations. From the time the 9th doctor implied he might be santa I liked the thought of it being true, after all, who else is kind, often a loose end, and has a particular affection for the people of earth, especially children. Plus if he can spend half his life on trenzalore it's not inconceivable he could spend a few hundred years being santa, not that he'd even have to for it too be true. with the TARDIS he could easily be santa without ever having to do it constant.

The name SANTA CLAUS. neither element of that name is a common earth name
Santa Claus is an American corruption of Sinterklaas which came from Sint Niklaas, which is Dutch for Saint Nicholas, which is an Earth name.

I think Doctor Blue Box was confusing the term "Earth" with "English".

I would have laughed scornfully at this suggestion at one time, but if the Moon can be a chicken, nothing is beyond possibility.

Bah! He's not going to be the real Father Christmas, nor a time lord - too far fetched. He'll be the resurrected soul of someone Clara first met when he was a child and then got kidnapped by Kavorian to be turned into a Goo double and sent to climb down the chimney of young Amelia's house and leave gifts of Roman soldier toys and pandora box books. Meanwhile his non Goo real self was time travelled to random events in River Songs timeline for reasons that will be thought up during the writing of the season 9 finale.

Something straightforward like that.
