Who will win - The caveman or The Astronaut?
henrywilliams58

This is a question Facebook asked me in a focus group.

Quote:
“Now for a different type of question. I want you to be as creative as possible with your answer and use your imagination. If there were a survival competition held between a caveman and an astronaut, who would win and why?”

It may sound off-forum but answer it straight and then think of how you would answer if BBC-SCD asked you that question.

An earthy caveman tango should always win out against an overly prop'ed spaceman salsa, with the celebrity zooming in from the gantrys.

Caveman. The astronaut has seen different worlds and knows that everything has an outside as well as an inside but all that she or he is has its beginning in the basic ingenuity and sheer learning power of the caveman. Caveman knows how to source, gain and use all the resources necessary for life, and the story-binding potential of our species is already there to keep up spirits and imagine the world that is actually there.

Both however are explorers and used to maximising limited resources. There's probably a lot they have in common that both can use to re-begin society. The answer is that they team up and live happily

ETA if we have to choose, I pick caveman because I prefer stubble

Is Ola the astronaut? There are no shops in space (so far... Tesco's probably already bought the best locations)

Caveman assesses what is ; astronaut wonders what could be and looks beyond what is. Who would survive? The uncomplicated realist accustomed to basic living.

In a competition between a technologically advanced and far more developed astronaut and a neanderthal with the brain of the size of a pea who is unable to string a sentence together (I'll refuse to make a comment about the X Factor forum here), that's who'd come out on top? Ignoring the fact that all cavemen have been dead for thousands of years. That would be even less of a close competition then.

Interesting. Probable source. Though not necessarily the definitive answer.

My answer for Facebook - as it would be for BBC-SCD is neither. They are in reality in different parallel universes.

If you see your products as being universal be aware of different tastes and structure accordingly. Facebook should structure for handheld smartphone as well as laptop and PC without excluding the other.

SCD should be aware that not everybody is interested in the views generated by The Whirling Dervish on Acid Cameraman. And have a balance of music to suit the celebs and audience.

Not all children want to become astronauts. It does take person who is curious and wants to strive for something. 1,000s of people apply to join the astronaut program, and only a handful are selected - for physical fitness and intelligence.

The serious answer is that, in any situation, astronauts would survive best. For the simple reason that they are specifically trained in survival techniques in all possible environments. One of their survival courses involves making their own shelter, in temperatures of -15. See here:
http://youtu.be/-k5RXQtw0GI?t=1m55s

They also know how to survive in deserts, or even in the middle of an ocean.

24 US astronauts and at least 10 Russian have been killed. The fatality rate is 60 times as dangerous as the most dangerous civilian occupation. Astronauts are brave, smart, and very well trained.

Also worth bearing in mind that when the caveman sees the astronaut approaching with a bloody great club in his hand, he'll only be thinking - No way am I going to wait around while he starts a fire under me!

Cavemen aren't dead; we're here. Neanderthals might be, though some evidence for interbreeding. As for small brains… Uh uh. Neanderthals had larger brains than us and a pitch-based language. Remember the Singing Neanderthals??

Spoken language in humans has existed at least 200, 000 years but probably much longer. My favourite theory is that hum language development was assisted by our ancient relationship with the dog. Their amazing sense of smell (neurologically synthetic and direct reception rather than analytic) is costly in terms of brain function but the early and profound relationship between the two species freed-up brain space in the human animal who (bit by bit: nat selection styleeee) could rely on their canine work-mate for hunting out prey, and that free brain space (bit by bit, nat selection styleeee) led to lang acquisition.

Craig will penalize the astronaut for an illegal lift-off and penalize the caveman for the lack of an opposable thumb.

Dog's have certainly stimulated my use of language, either cursing them or remonstrating
with their shit-for-brains owners.
