An absolute Gem of a programme

Made, and based in Australia.

A woman is perched between the harsh legacy of the Second World War and the hope of a new life in her native Australia.

In the first episode, Sarah Adams learns some tragic news, which leads her to decide to return to her home.

Romantic drama set during the 1950s, starring Marta Dusseldorp.

Weekdays on BBC2, 3:00pm this week, 3:10pm next week

Marta Dusseldorp is brilliant in the leading role.

Well worth watching, on iPlayer if you miss any Episodes.

Thoroughly recommended.
It's absolutely quality, I'm a big fan of the English language and the language used in it is fabulous

It's a shame that the Australian producers used few original recordings in the second series.
In my opinion, lots of contemporary music really added to the enjoyment of the first series.

This second series has used a lot of "covers." This may have been an economy measure.
For example the close out recording for today's episode was just a cover of a great recording.

A #10 USA hit for Jo Stafford in 1950.

There's far more emotion in this original recording, as it is "of its time," as is this excellent series.

As a longtime fan of Australian drama/soaps, I'm catching up with this series on BBC Iplayer. I didn't know it was originally aired on BBC2 on weekday afternoons back in 2014. Am up to Series 1 episode 9 so far. And well I think it's a pretty good series. Easy gentle viewing, good characters and storylines. Enjoyable series to watch. Similar-ish in style to old 80's shows like The Flying Doctors and A Country Practice.

Only thing is with it being on 5 episodes per week, and me working 5 days per week, and out in the evenings a couple of times per week or busy with other things, etc, it's a bit of a challenge to keep up with the episodes before they get deleted from BBC Iplayer. Plus I'm away for a week the week after next. Hmm... will have to try and watch about 4 episodes of it over the weekend to catch up a bit further to avoid missing out on any episodes!

What saddens me is that this is a prime example of how to make an excellent TV series and it's the Australians, giving the lesson.
.
It's just great story telling, no flashy gimmicks, like "clever" camera antics, over-loud intrusive music, or blue/green filters. Not one complaint on here about being unable to hear the dialogue.
Excellent production values, good script and stellar casting.

The BBC could learn a lot from this.

I'm hoping that the BBC show the re-edited (i.e. the "proper") ending for the S2 series finale, otherwise I gather that a number of things in S3 won't make sense.

Reading some of the background to the drama being revived by Foxtel, unless I misread something it looks like the writer always intended there to be four series, and he mentions that the two extra series will allow for longer story arcs.

Edited to add:
Found an interview with Noni Hazlehurst where she says that they start film S4 this month.

ISPs have blocked access to watchseries on the instructions of a High Court judge

Anyway, this thread is to discuss A Place to Call Home, not illegal download sites and what has and has not been blocked.

I kept the last of series two recorded because I thought I might need a catch up before series 3.

I am so in love with Jack!!

from what I have gleaned off a few Australian sites, the producers recorded two endings (on the basis that the show would not get renewed by Channel Seven). The one which was aired tied up some loose ends and tidied up the stories in a less than satisfactory manner (so that the stories could end there). The alternate ending was made assuming that a third series would go ahead, which didn't happen at that time as Seven canned the programme. The BBC transmission in 2014 contained the "tidy" ending.

Yea I could do. The HDD on my HDD/DVD Recorder is full up with things I haven't watched yet, things I'd like to watch again or copy to DVD. It's long overdue a bit of a clearout! Could record to DVD's though. I'll start recording it instead from the start of Series 3 and probably just watch 2 episodes per week when I start Series 3.

I watched a few more episodes of Series 1 this weekend. Should be able to fit in watching about 4 episodes within the next week. So I should be able to keep up with the rest of the episodes up till the end of Series 2 on Iplayer now.

I'm wondering why the BBC aren't showing this at "prime time," on BBC2.

Don't want an Australian drama to beat the ratings of something "home grown?"

Both BBC and ITV cut showing imported shows at peak times(and indeed at anytime of the day) 20 odd years ago. Back in the late 80's and early 90's BBC1 were showing good Aussie shows like The Flying Doctors and Police Rescue(remember when this used to be on at Wednesdays at 8pm?) and other mini-series at peak times. When these changes came in, the last few series of The Flying Doctors was relegated to a 2:15pm weekdays slot.

A shame really. As good Australian shows like A Place To Call Home deserve a prime time slot. But instead nowadays we get too many shows like cookery competition series and DIY series, etc taking up the peak time schedules!

I've called the BBC "The Cooking Channel" for some time now. In my opinion there's far too many cookery or food related programmes on their channels.

The BBC (and those on here who think "they can do no wrong"), will defend the practice, as these programmes get reasonable ratings, given their costs to produce.

The fact that it's probably mostly the same people watching them, doesn't seem to matter.
