Hitachi 24HXJ15U iPlayer problems
I'm having problems with a less than a year old 24in Hitachi TV/DVD combo. The iPlayer function worked when I bought it but now suffers badly from slowing down and stopping after about 5 to 10 minutes of playback with recent episodes of e.g. Countryfile or Strictly Come Dancing. YouTube videos play fine.
Am I the only one with this problem? Should I return it to Argos for repair or exchange, or would a replacement Hitachi me just the same? My 2010 Sony Bravia runs iPlayer just fine. I have a month to decide... My (BT) wired broadband at the TV is in excess of 4Mbps. Any help much appreciated. |

However, presumably you are aware that it's not an Hitachi TV, just a cheapo Vestel set - if you could swap it for a better set you might be better off. I would imagine Argos would want it looking at first, and would probably show no fault on decent broadband?. |

The other thing to check with your broadband is whether your provider is 'throttling' your speed at various times. Also, when you're using the TV are other devices also using your BB connection at the same time? e.g. mobile phone, tablets etc ? I think Nigel's right, if you return it there will probably be a request to test it and there's a chance that it will come back as 'No fault found'. In the same way a broadcast signal could be subject to breaking up owing to an aerial / reception issue. |

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I am aware that the TV is a Vestel inside - but all other respects other than iPlayer I am delighted with it - picture quality is excellent and sound is good for its size.
I have tested the TV plugged direct into my BT Home Hub which has a 6Mbps typical measured speed and it still fails, whilst other iPlayer devices in the household (2010 Sony Bravia over Homeplug, Android tablet over WiFi) work fine. Argos technical support have told me that anything over 3Mbps should be fine, and I can achieve that all the time even with indirect connections to the router (network over power wiring etc.). What I find odd is that a programme stops entirely - I would have understood if it stuttered due to poor network bandwidth, but it grinds to a complete halt with a fixed image and no sound. This suggests a software bug to me. What I'm really looking for is a "this a well known problem seen by many" response which would suggest I am not alone, otherwise I should assume my unit is defective in some odd way and return it. AlanO - you are absolutely right to suggest I will get a "fault not found" response. I have also complained to the BBC and they tell me they have had a very high number of iPlayer complaints lately and are making changes. So I think I will wait a few weeks before acting. Is there any way of reloading the application software? This would overcome any suggestion my software might have become corrupted. |
