I've worked with lots of Marks unfortunately. Defence and energy sectors are full of 'em. And no, I'd never choose it. In fact I just pulled out of an interview process where I had ethical concerns about what they did and the culture, and opted for a job with a smaller less 'glamorous' company who seem like good people. I need to sleep at night. But there's been countless studies on modern leadership and the correlation between psychopathy and business success not just at the level of the individual but company-wide (see excellent documentary The Corporation for a close study of this or the one on Enron).
I'm not for a second suggesting Mark is a sociopath, just that there certainly is a 'current climate' that increasingly values what are considered sociopathic traits to succeed....I.e.charm, lack of empathy, deception, ruthlessness, manipulation. Studies are showing an increase in sociopathic behaviour and its increasing prominence in industries like business and the media. And ethics have most definitely shifted to normalise what would have been aberrant decades ago in all but the highest echelons.
I completely agree with you that The Apprentice shouldn't perpetuate it.
EDIT: I should have used a different word than "brilliantly" to describe Mark' competitive strategy. Brilliant by some modern standards. Not by my own.

Nope, sorry. Thinking about what's good for your executives and shareholders over what's good for the people of a country or the planet itself is not something to dismiss as necessary. There's literally too many case studies and examples to throw out here but something has gone horribly wrong with capitalism. Those behaviours have destroyed economies, ruined natural habitats and actually cost lives. And nothing is controlling it.
Not saying it's good, just that is what's needed. How many times do we hear about compulsory purchases of land because London wants to hold the olympics or needs to get to Manchester that little bit faster. Unfortunately there comes a time, when we must stop having meetings and discussions and actually get things done.

He wouldn't have a go at Katie because she's very confident, she's got a mouth on her and has been more of a performer. He was quite harsh on Lindsay previously. Just seems to pick on the women he doesn't feel threatened by.
Well lets say he doesn't pick on women or Daniel. The guy is clearly playing a very sneaky game. He won't last long.

The title seems to suggest that which is my mistake. But I do think he seems to target people who try to work hard.... even though they maybe not very experienced on the task than others and have been contributing more than him. Like yesterday with Lauren (Nick and Karen had to remind her what she contributed) when he kept going on and on about her not contributing. I think he is good but needs to be more mature about things. I can understand trying to save yourself from getting fired in the boardroom by defending yourself but seems like when you try to highlight other peoples faults or target one person it makes more of an impact (and thats why he does it). Its always you did this wrong....blah blah blah always needing a scapegoat. Plus the comments he makes on camera saying one thing to a candidate supporting them etc and the next behind their back backbiting about them make him look shady.
-He made Lindsay breakdown and reveal her true feelings which luckily made him look more of an idiot to begin with. I hope he felt guilty.
-The sneaky comments he made towards Daniel (in the task Daniel was in charge of) which added to Daniel being ganged up on in the boardroom (it did add thoughts to people minds).

It's subtle, it's canny, it's what some successful people do, they don't just promote themselves, they target and eliminate the competition. But I can see why it's not endearing....in a climate of corporate greed and government corruption, the public are hostile to the kind of manoeuvring and ruthlessness we see from politicians and business leaders. And I think that's what people see in Mark. But the public don't have to invest 250k and in that sense, he's probably one of the safest pair of hands in the process (if he's got a good proposition.)”

Good point about eliminating competition.... do you think Lord Sugar would want that ruthlessness.? Imagine what Mark could do to him in a couple of years? Sugar could see through that....he'll probably prefer someone like Tom i.e Roisin....

I'm either very naïve or very stupid
but I actually think Mark is nice Well as nice as most others this series. He is witty, well he amuses me and as far as I'm aware he's not bullied or blustered or intimidated anyone in an overly aggressive manner. Also, even if he isn't trusted because he is clever and believed to be manipulative, still I simply cannot understand why epithets like 'nasty', 'bully' and 'pathetic' are given to him and I do not understand why his clear to see talents as you've described aren't praised more. I understand the negative implications of the current climate but surely the whole show should suffer rather than someone who is actually rather god at what is required by the show and as for arrogance have posters not met Daniel and James
At least Mark works at his witty put downs and so called arrogant statements

From the minute he was PM this week he started digging at Lauren. He was sowing the seed as he knew she was his target to get rid of. He either ignored her altogether or moved her off as in the website design thing - so that he could say she didn't contribute. She wasn't allowed to contribute - same thing in the boardroom - he talked over her and wouldn't let her answer. But don't for a minute think he's on anybody's side - he's out for number one. At any cost. A real nasty snake in the grass.

I'd like him to stay till the interviews. Then we'll see the real Mark. The one that is not completely honest about his qualifications and experience. They'll unpick every little untruth he's put in his portfolio, and maybe how stupid he actually is. He's very sly but there seem to be still people who are falling for the "competence". Reality is he finds someone to stab in the back, picks their weakness, then he's in there. Slimeball of the biggest order.

Why do you think Daniel of his own volition came to the same conclusion?

I don't see how a stupid person could so accurately feign clever and as for competence , he is competent, there is no way round that.

If hadn't become PM he would probably have been fired straightaway if his team lost. Lord Alan made that pretty clear the last time in the boardroom. Lord Alan also made the same comment to Lauren but she either ignored it or didn't understand.

I can think of 2 reasons that Daniel came to that conclusion neither of which have to do with Lauren's actual lack of contribution:
1) Daniel knew that Lauren was his only chance at not being fired. By his own grudging admission, Mark performed well. Daniel was going to target whoever else was in the boardroom and wasn't Mark. Factor in Lauren's weaker pitching, and there you go, Daniel had his deflector shield
2) Mark had teed it up, first by flattering Daniel then by himself openly targeting Lauren and leading that charge. Daniel is a narcissist. They're comically easy to manipulate.
Flattery and self-preservation. Two tried and tested Apprentice tactics. Throw in a bit of compliance and conformity theory (if you repeat something often and loud enough, or you are credible, everyone accepts it as a truth).

If Lord Sugar wanted both Mark and Lauren to be PM so badly this week, he should have put them on separate teams.

Daniel and James must be kept in for the interviews, they just have to have that grilling from Claude
Mark is definitely trying to get rid of Daniel. We don't see alot of anything really but from what we have seen Mark seems to get on with everybody as he got a lot of hugs when he returned to the house whereas it seemed Daniel didn't get any, or not straight away (editting again?)
Mark appears to dislike Daniel but he may see him as competition, I'm not sure but he is so patronising at times it's cringeworthy
Sugar doesn't usually go for somebody like him, even though he appears to do well on tasks, Sugar likes the 'nice' people, and even though Mark appears popular i'm hoping Sugar will see through him.
I have a feeling it's going to be another 'Tom' win where the winner didn't actually do alot but still won as his business plan obviously leapt out at Sugar,,,,on that basis I think Soloman will win.

Well, the way the teams were split this week there was actually need for a sub-team leader.
The other way of looking at it is by keeping them in the same team perhaps he thought they were going to fight it out.
Whoever wins, he keeps.
Not really you can't be a team leader of one person, this week took co-operation from the sub team, which to be honest both teams did well.

Daniel said that Lauren wasn't doing anything earlier in the show, before the board room and well before their failure.
My argument isn't in favour of Lauren actually not having done anything as we don't know. All we know is that the edit tried to sell that story, Daniel backed it, Mark clearly thought it and Sugar agreed. My point was why pick on just Mark using this argument? It seems to be tainted yet again with the 'let's hate Mark' tag rather than actual analysis of the show / events.

Sugar doesn't usually go for somebody like him, even though he appears to do well on tasks, Sugar likes the 'nice' people, and even though Mark appears popular i'm hoping Sugar will see through him.
I have a feeling it's going to be another 'Tom' win where the winner didn't actually do alot but still won as his business plan obviously leapt out at Sugar,,,,on that basis I think Soloman will win.”

What is there to see though
You have said he seems popular. Everyone bar Daniel likes him and they live with him. Many don't like Daniel and find James difficult. impossible even BUT they like Mark.
