The original sale price was £17bn. I think there was a typo in one of the earlier reports.
Yes that's right it BT sold O2 to Telefonica £17.7 billion which makes more sense.

I reckon one of the reasons BT wanted to get rid of O2 in the first place was the cost of that pricey 3G licence which cost them £4.03bn plus they would have to "Invest in 3G network upgrades" clearly that was a bit of a disaster.
BT RETAINED the 3G licence dept when it sold off BT Cellnet so the new company (mmO2 plc pre Telefonica) had a good start in life!

Well it came back to bite them in the arse when Ofcom threated to fine O2 (Telefonica) £40 Million and shorten the length of their licence for failing to meet their 3G coverage obligations in 2008

BT spunked a shit load of money on Football rights. They will be quite happy to do the same on a Mobile Network. Yeah BT know where their priorities are and its not on Fibre or any sort of broadband infrastructure for consumers
Looks like they are planning to spend even more on football rights soon with the upcoming auction for EPL rights that will incur another line rental increase. Which will mean every other isp does the same i do think it is wrong. I still find it terribly laughable the amount of urban and sub urban areas that BT have needed tax payers money to put in FTTC.

Does anyone find it weird that as soon as Wavejock was banned from here, Telefonica suddenly decided to sell O2?

You think O2 is bad you should see Vodafones 3G coverage.

I can imagine how the thread would have deteriorated with Wavejock bleating on about O2's satisfied customers and how wise they were to make minimal investment in their data network and slagging off Three

According to reports, British Telecom is in early talks with Telefonica to purchase O2, the same mobile operator it released back in 2001. Not only has BT set its sights on O2, but the UK's largest network EE has also been offered in a separate deal.

Now EE is a really interesting one...

It's quite useful spectrum though to be fair. 900MHz 3G, 1800MHz 3G, 800MHz 4G.

Puts them on a similar playing field to EE!
Well given how much money O2 has invested in its network since 2004, I'd say about £71.7bn.

Thing is, O2 has a strong brand (stronger than EE) but EE would be the network to buy. However, I have no idea what it would cost. Presumably all that investment in infrastructure, spectrum etc would make it a much more costly buy - but you'd be getting a solid network from day one.

And it's quite clear that as time goes on both FT and DT seem increasingly keen to get rid, so that could actually help a buyer get it for a good price.
Looks to be EE according to the releases.

Would be a lot easier for BT to do a deal with Telefonica for O2 as they would have to come to a deal with both DT and FT for EE as they both have a 50:50 stake...
Also, BT recently penned a deal with EE to provide services for BT Mobile....

Wonder how that will pan out? Surely buying EE in this case would be better?
Reuters is reporting that yet another mobile operator has approached BT for a buyout. The agency cites "a person familiar with the matter" who says that EE, the UK's biggest mobile operator, has held talks with the group.

Its all go

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/business-30130459
etc etc etc ....

I thought O2's 3G coverage was the same as Vodafone's now? That's been my experience in the south of the UK.

This thread is completely unnecessary, it's a straight duplicate of the other one. What was the point?

Hopefully it gets locked and the conversation can continue in just one thread.

EE hahahaha. No.

Put it this way.. There is a reason efforts in to the BT EE 4G "new service" trial have cooled of late..

Case Closed.

Imagine Hutchinson would buy O2 can't see anyone else being a possible buyer. Not that much of a surprise that Telefonica wants to sell O2 UK after there expansion plans in Brazil have gone ahead along with the German plans.

I can quote back 12 months to me saying that I thought all of the O2 brand would slowly be sold off by Telefonica in favour of the Movistar emerging market opportunities in the mainly Spanish speaking countries. 3 pieces of O2 in Europe have been sold or part sold, with broadband in the UK as well, so this (if it happens) will be the 5th O2 sell off by Telefonica in 3 years.

I think BT have a very strong interest in getting back into mobile, with mobile data becoming big business. BT can make a big success of the business along side it's other TV and broadband business. I don't think EE would get regulatory approval as it would make them too big, so it would have to be Hutch or BT, they are the only realistic buyers.

Is Wavejock on a perma-ban then? as it has been over a week and I would have expected him to be very vocal on this.

EE aren't looking to buy O2, they (like Telefonica) are considering selling up to BT.

Spain will stay though as it's Spanish speaking, branded Movistar and their HQ. I think they decided from the outset of their financial crisis that they would re-focus the business on the Movistar side, focus on emerging markets and take an Axe to the O2 networks, which is what they've done over the 3 years chop by chop.

Would Hutchison realistically get approval to buy O2? It'd take the UK down to three network operators with the resulting reduction in competition.

It still isn't clear what they'd really want with O2 other than the spectrum and maybe the customers, as 3's network is lightyears ahead
