Thirty-years ago, on the 21st November 1984 Stan Ogden died off-screen 3 months after his portrayer Bernard Youens sadly passed away.

Here is the scene when Hilda receives the news Stan died.

I did a thread a few months ago, commenting how on Jean Alexander did well during this storyline and the emotion. Stan and Hilda are possibly my most favourite pairing in the history of the show.

Thanks for this. Brings back great memories just seeing the credits. I think Corrie as we see it now was driven by the success of EE in 1985.

Brookside had been on for a couple of years during those clips but it still retained its Corrie qualities. I think tptb changed the mould due to the competition from the London soap.

Bumping this thread as today marks 30 years since Stan's funeral episode aired. Probably one of Coronation Street's best yet incredibly moving episodes in its history.

No probs

I watched the episode on YouTube this morning and it's just beautiful. There was a real sense of community and a lot of heart - everything that Coronation Street is about. And of course the writing is exceptional.

Jean Alexander as Hilda was incredible in that episode. Composed throughout the day and left all alone with only her memories her guard slips and the tears flow. Beautiful and so real.

Stan and Hilda were just perfect together and Jean Alexander was sublime as Hilda.

I can still hear her singing with a fag in her mouth as she cleaned the Rovers, taking her curlers out on only special occasions and who can forget how proud she was of her 'Muriel' and yet she had that special subtle way of being able to move you to tears, her grief at the loss of her beloved Stan was so real.

Jean Alexander and Bernard Youens were a classic double act. I think only Bill Tarmey and Liz Dawn came close to them.

Agreed.

R.I.P. Bernard Youens.
