Really can't believe it's been a year already. That really flew by.
Just wondering, looking back, what are your memories of it and how did you celebrate?
I remember just being so hyped by it, especially after seeing Night of the Doctor and An Adventure in Space and Time.

Went with a mate to the O2 3D cinema showing and loving seeing all the fans cosplaying as I'm guessing most came from the nearby Excel centre Official 50th Celebration. (Man, I wish I had a ticket for that.)
Just felt great being there in the cinema with other fans and hearing the reactions of everyone seeing Capaldi (Think I accidentally hit my mate at that moment ), Tom Baker (Everyone went ) and seeing all of them together at the end and all of them credited, which got the biggest cheer.
Then going home and watching The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. which I thought was bloody brilliant.
For me, looking back, it really was something special. What are your memories?

There was a LOT of worrying early on in the year that not enough was being done. Possibly because we were told Doctor Who would 'take over television'. So even in February some people were complaining.

However, I felt the 50th year was brilliant. Apart from series 7b which in my opinion wasn't very good. The 50th anniversary episode itself was brilliant though.

I was lucky enough to get tickets to the Excel convention and it was fantastic. The five Doctors reboot was a real highlight too. Wonderful script and performances.

I've not always been a big fan of Moffat's show running but I thought the anniversary he did well.

Wil we have a ten year nu Who anniversary story arc next year? I hope so. I wonder what they have planned...

I remember it so well. Loved all the build up and special programmes - Brian Cox's Science bit, Adventure in Space and Time, 5ish Doctors. 23rd felt like Christmas to me when it arrived, wish I'd managed to see it in the cinema for the atmosphere and I always think the time war scenes would look amazing in 3d!

I loved an adventure in space and time and really wanted david bradley in the 50th anniversary as the doctor.

The actual special probably touched enough of the right basis even as with new who they are all instantly forgettable. I think there was a chance to do something iconic with the episode but what we got was a fun little romp.

I think day of the doctor was a fitting 50th episode (although it would have been better with eccleston) and one of the best, if not the best script Moffat has written since he took charge of the show.

The only thing about watching it now though, is that, it is still a great episode, but I wish they'd regenerated the doctor a year early, as it now feels lacking without Capaldi in the mix (apart from that one scene) and it would have been great with him in it as well.

I've thouroughly enjoyed Doctor Who since 1965 ish! Watched it ever since (apart from the last few years!!) Enjoyed the whole of the 21 series too - apart from an era with Matt Smith!! (like McCoy!).
"An Adventure in Space & Time" was a classic drama. And "Day of the Doctor' was excellent too, as was 'Time of the Doctor'.
Three Specials - well done!!

I was quite hyped for it. I thought I was going to miss the chance to see it in the cinema in 3D because we were going to Wembley for the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final. We would be staying over in London along with my wife's sister. Gutted!

Then I found a brand new shopping complex with a brand new Cineworld had just opened right alongside Wembley Stadium. Happy days! Wigan won, Pizza Express with Peroni Gran Riserva and a great Doctor Who celebration with one or two in costume!

It was a great day!

Day of the Doctor is still a massive disappointment a year on. A celebration of the new series with nothing but lip service paid to the classic series. The War Doctor was an instantly forgettable idea (season 8 had to remind us a few times the War Doctor existed) but John Hurt's Doctor taking the mick out of the two idiots was at least funny.

Night of the Doctor gave us a glimpse of what the anniversary special should have been.

...Absolutely fantastic ..... The 50th was a belter

The Night of The Doctor was wonderful. As a Big Finish fan it elated me to see 8 on screen again.

An Adventure in Space and Time was also fantastic. Possibly the best written, acted, art directed and directed part of the 50th Anniversary year for me.

The first thing I saw was The Night of the Doctor. A hugely enjoyable short I saw several times...spoiled only by the fact that nobody I watched it with knew who Paul McGann was. For me though it was a real treat and got me enthused.

I watched An Adventure in Space and Time in the late afternoon of November 23rd. It was absolutely wonderful, and in hindsight the absolute highlight of the Anniversary content. Well crafted and beautifully acted it felt like a genuine labour of love, rather than a factory-churned project like much of Doctor Who felt around this time for me. With The Crimson Horror being my favourite episode from the rear half of Series 7 by a mile, Mark Gatiss really made the 50th year for me in the end...something I never expected.

The Day of the Doctor utterly disappointed me...and I checked the time several times to see how far in it was in the hope it'd pick up. I assumed Eccleston wouldn't show so my hopes were down, yet I was still excited by a lot of potential it had shown. I was lucky enough to receive the DVD early - I've still not found anyone else this happened to which is really peculiar... I got it on the day of the episode itself, toyed with watching it and eventually caved and watched it about 90 minutes ahead of schedule...just because I'd never get the opportunity again. It wasn't worth bragging about though as aside from John Hurt and Billie Piper, I was impressed by so very little in the story (Tom Baker cameo was also very nice). The War Doctor was a stupid idea, the rewriting of the Time War is something I'll never forgive Moffat for and resent him for as well, and it was just a generic, weak, boring, largely predictable, non-innovative episode. All of time and space, all that history behind the show, all that potential...and it resorted to a multi-Doctor story that didn't do very much at all.

The Five-ish Doctors was another real treat...a genuine laugh and I'm so glad it was made! I'd love to see the teased sequel!

Overall it was a poor year for Doctor Who for me, despite being a fan of Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman. It had some highlights, but the best things seemed to be those that weren't the show itself. Doctor Who found its heart in minisodes, spoofs and dramas... I'm thankful for those a darn sight more than anything the show proper gave me that year.

The enemy of the world and web of fear finds was my highlight.

Well, I wasn't so blown away by Adventure in space and time as most, it was very well done but the Matt cameo broke the mood and David Bradley was good but didn't pass for Hartnell for me, but never mind.
Night of the Doctor was superb, I had it on a loop for ages. The Five-ish Doctors was easily the funniest thing out there. Day of the Doctor - overall it was genuinely fantastic, the only thing to improve it would have been another second or so with Eccleston's face starting to appear (a bit more than it did).

I was surprised BBC didnt repeat it on BBC3 yesterday

Yeah, that was pretty spectacular.


I really liked the Matt cameo when it happened, but it seems out of place now.

Great but it needed eccelstone

I enjoyed the anticipation and some of the programming but, for me, 'Day of the Doctor' was little more than a typical Moffatian hot mess. Yes, seeing Capaldi and Baker was cool, and the interplay between 10 and 11 was amusing, but I actually preferred the references that were in 'Name of the Doctor' more.

I'm afraid last year is a bit of a haze for me. I do remember looking forward to the 50th, but dreading it at the same time.
Looking forward to it in regards of Tennant returning and trying to anticipate how 10 and 11 would get on.
I was dreading it though as Moffat isn't my cup of tea to say the least, and so I was expecting the entire special to be a disaster.
Thankfully it wasn't. Not to the vast majority anyway.
My personal opinion was it could have done without the Zygons. I would have preferred it set on Gallifrey, for the entire special. We get enough on Earth as it is.
Also, as much as I love John Hurt and his portrayal of the War Doctor. I believe the special was damaged badly by not having Christopher Eccleston on board. Should have made more of an effort to bring him back in my view.

As for the rest of it. Well I can't stand Brian Cocky, so rather than chuck a brick at the television screen, I avoided that particular programme.
Adventure in time and space though was brilliant. Even better than the 50th in my opinion.
That was worth waiting for by itself.

On the whole, I did find the 50th year disappointing. Not half of what we were promised. Something along the lines of, we are taking over television. Hmmmmm
Can't say I'm surprised. Being as Moffat said it, and I wouldn't believe him if he said rain was wet.

A good laugh overall not to be taken too seriously,great interplay between Matt and David.

The war Doctor was nonsense though and I'd be happy if he was somehow retconned out

Smith and Tennant are a joy to watch together with a genuinely natural and funny chemistry.

Matt Smith is beyond wonderful in this episode. I love his face as 10 is explaining away kissing a Zygon. Matt Smith was such a wasted Doctor after series 5, pushed too one side in favour of the writers arcs and ego.

The Hurt Doctor turned out to be a disappointment and was really nothing more than a gimmick to rush forward the ultimate regeneration fan boy question. Rather than adding to the mythology of the show it tended to muddy it unnecessarily.

I fully understand why 'the search for Gallifrey' needed bringing back as a future story arc, although I find it hard to believe any fan really thought Gallifrey was actually gone..kaput..ceased to be...an ex-planet But I found the way it was done kind of pissed over someone else's chips. I'm not surprised Christopher Eccleston declined to revisit the role. I think whole War Doctor scenario could have been better handled. In fact I'd rather it had been dropped all together as soon as Mr. Eccleston politely declined to alter the emotional crux of character he helped create and takes great pride in.

The actual moment... three Doctor stood around the big red button. Steven Moffat fails to get any excitement from it. It is the pivotal moment New Who is centered around, its arcs and heart have all come from this moment..it is the epicentre of modern Who and under Moffats hands it fell flat and was rushed. The difference between the two showrunner's...RTD would have had all three Doctors press the button.
But hey...it was Clara that stopped it...is there nothing in the shows core history this character hasn't changed or influenced?

The no show Hurt/Eccleston regeneration scene is probably the biggest disappointment in the shows history. I'm not sure why it was deemed a good idea to include it as seen. It sets the viewer up for a fall every time.

The Moment scenes in the barn with John Hurt and Billie Piper were well written and acted. I loved the Time War battle scenes on Gallifrey with John Hurt and 3D Dalek stalk sticking out of the TV and 'All Thirteen of them' has to go down as one of THE greatest Who moments. The Gallifrey painting was a wonderful link and worked well.

The Zygon story, whilst being the glue holding two other strands of the episode together really begins to drags the everything down the longer it goes on and its conclusion bores rather than excites.

There is enough excitement and great moments to keep the episode ticking over so it does what it says on the tin.

Not sure what you felt you were promised but in the 14 days build up, I doubt there were many people in the country not aware of Dr Who's 50th.

Starting earlier or putting more in, probably would have had more shouts of over hyping.

Night of the Doctor got me into the Big Finish plays, and Eighth quickly became my favourite incarnation of the Doctor.

The Day of the Doctor fails in some dramatic areas. Sometimes it came off as profound-but-technically-meaningless, the way we're supposed to fear hate then forgive Hurt Doctor was a bit faffy, and i have mixed feelings about how changing the Time War was handled. But it delivered on immense spectacle, so over-all I like it.

Time of the Doctor could have done without the nudity church and Tasha Lem, or faffing about with the Daleks remembering the Doctor again. But I like how it bulldozes through huge ammounts of plot and hand waves the hanging plot threads. It has this really compressed epic feel to the story which is a great cap to Matt Smiths tenure.

The exploding TARDIS was the only hand wave that bothered me. Again, the spectacle of the regeneration and the speech that followed, as the Doctor was surrounded by Amy and all the drawings, before blink and you'll miss it, I liked.

So over all I feel pretty positive about it.

I really liked Day of the Doctor as an episode. However I still don't like the idea of inserting a Doctor between 8 and 9 and really wish that had not happened. Other than that I have no complaints against it as a special episode... As the 50th however I think there should have been more links with the classic series (which admittedly is probably a very hard balance to get right: you don't want too much – but SM is paid to get it right). It felt like a celebration of the revived series and other bit’s thrown in for the sake of it. But as a story it stands up very well.

On the other hand I hated Time of the Doctor in almost everything. The “comedy” at the beginning was embarrassing and not funny. The flirting with Tasha Lem was pointless and unnecessary. The bringing back all the monster e.g weeping angles has been done so many times now its dull. The sending Clara back and forth just felt like padding. The explanations made no sense after waiting too long for them.
I’d actually only force myself it sit through it again if I was watching the chronologically; actually I am and I’m up to Time and the Rani which I am enjoying far more.

As for the 50th in general I thought it was well organised, there was enough without it being too much and it was varied too. The highlight I thought was Adventure In Time and Space (I normally dislike MG's Doctor Who stuff but this was brilliant). But the Science of Doctor Who, the radio Big Finish stuff, the documentaries. I thought they did really well.
