Can I just caution anyone who is considering buying the abomination that is the frozen Tesco 4 bird roast. We saw it in the freezer for £10, thought we might try it today to see if it might be worth having a few in the freezer for emergency Xmas meals.

No, no, no. It really was horrendous. What little duck and goose was in there was spongy, muddy, dry and so gross. It wouldn't cut properly and the stuffing was so incredibly tasteless, it was awful.

Also, the Lidl extra special chocolate bombes were just terrible as well. Stodgy and raw tasting. We will be avoiding those as well.

Anyone got any to avoid?

I bought a Tesco ready basted turkey crown 2 years ago.
I cooked it as normal, but it tasted awful. It was as if the butter it had been basted with was too oily, if that makes sense, it also had a strange taste.
Last year I bought my usual Asda ready basted one, and it was delicious. I only bought the Tesco one as I was shopping in there for a change, it's Asda this year most definitely.

Most 4 or 3 bird roasts are not that good to be honest.

Like you say they have way too much bland stuffing in them, and very little of the more exotic birds such as the duck or goose.

I think they are over rated.

You can't beat a proper whole bird. Just have to watch out for all the grease from a Goose.

Certainly one for £10 from a supermarket will be.

This on the other hand:-

.
The only ones that are any good are the ones that start with an ostrich on the outer layer, and a sparrow in the middle.

Ostrich / emu / swan / turkey / goose / capon / duck / pigeon / sparrow.

You'll need one of those medieval kitchens, though..

Tesco are really good at refunding if you are not satisfied with anything. If you still have the receipt go and see them.

I avoid packets of stuffing mix and bread sauce mix. I always make my own and they are a million times better.

For some reason I can’t bare the thought of a bird within a bird and I have no desire whatsoever to eat one.

*shudders*

I am a complete hypocrite though because I know I could eat any of the birds separately

Are you sure about the swan?

Yes they are. Even if you just phone them, they sort it out for you.

Turducken is amazing! If. and it's a big if, the ratio of meat to stuffing is right. And the stuffings are well seasoned and interesting. I'm not sure any supermarket could do that.

I've done them from scratch and they're a lot of work, but a real conversation starter.

Three days without being attacked.
That's a result!

I have tried the Tesco Simply Chicken Breast which comes in a foil container and you just slam it in the oven. But it was horrid processed chicken and quite unpalatable.

I have tried the Aldi (or maybe Lidl) 3 bird roast and that was horrible too. My Mum raved about it and bought me one - but the dogs ended up eating it.

I love stuffing, but once I bought some stuffing balls. Im sure they were Aunt Bessies and they were horrible and overpowering.

I agree. Plus, usually being hungover I tend to just nibble at the white meat anyway.

I reckon if you can get a decent butcher's own then it would be quite nice.
