Anyone a programmer, have a Phablet, and use it to code on the go? If that's you, and you'd like to swap tips/ideas, introduce yourself and let's see if we can improve the overall experience.
I just picked up an iPhone 6 plus and am currently experimenting with 3 editors, 2 cloud drives, and 3 keyboard combos as follows...
Editors: Textastic, Koder, DraftCode
Cloud Drives: Google, Dropbox
Keyboards: iOS standard, Swype, Blink
Editors: So far I've used Textastic more than the others as I've previously used it on an iPad. Sadly it doesn't currently properly support the larger screen on the 6 plus (e.g. keyboard isn't sized down). It does have some useful swipes though. For example, swipe with one finger left/right to move the cursor one space in that direction. Or 2 fingers left/right to jump the cursor over a word. It has syntax highlighting for lots and lots of languages. Unfortunately no cursor or tag pair highlighting. It does have code completion.
DraftCode comes with its own local PHP intepreter, and can even offer a version of WordPress. If you also happen to be a web developer, this makes it useful for testing if you can't get access to mobile Internet. It works more like an IDE than an editor, but doesn't seem to support any cloud drives, which makes getting files in/out somewhat problematic! Unless I'm missing something...I haven't spent much time with it. Same with Koder.
Cloud Drives: in iOS land Dropbox is generally supported as a native drive by all the editors I've looked at apart from DraftCode, which doesn't really support the cloud at all. Unfortunately for me (I'm an Apps for Business customer) Google Drive is only supported via 'Open as...'. Use of DropBox by both Textastic and Koder is excellent.
Textastic supports iCloud, but I have no idea how to make use of it from my desktop or laptop. And I don't have a lot of storage there anyway.
Keyboards: Blink provides considerable customization, including the assignment of custom characters and strings to particular keys via long-press. This is brilliant for getting useful strings down quickly, and bringing coding symbols to the front page of the keyboard (e.g. &&, ==, !=, ||). I can imagine temporarily assigning namespaces, constants and variables while working on a specific project. The amount of vertical space it takes up can be reduced, which helps with Textastic in its current form.
I haven't spent much time with Swype as it takes up too much vertical space in Textastic (and also Google Docs) and there's no way to reduce its size. It does have a very nice feel to it and I get the feeling that investing time with it will make regular typing much easier, so perhaps its better suited to Google Docs rather than coding.
So what am I missing? Any suggestions, tips, ideas?
