I'm asking your personal opinions here. What do you think about Adele's album '21'? Is it good or not and does it compare to the best albums of this century?

It's undeniable that "21" has been a massive seller but it's not an album that I enjoy listening to.

I would put Laura Marling's "I Speak Because I Can" album in my personal top 10.

It's rubbish, boring, bland drivel.

I love Adele (I think she's hysterical), and I did buy 21. But despite a few good songs, I still can't fathom why is was so successful 4.5 million sales in the UK is just insane.

Honestly, I'll never understand how it managed to become so big. I do like the album, and there's some really good songs on there, but it's nowhere near one of the best albums of this century, at least not on my list.

It's a good album but imo, it doesn't even make the top 50 if i had to rank my fav albums of the 21st century. I hold Back to black in a much higher regard from a british female.

It's a good solid album overall, but really it only has a few memorable gems on there, otherwise the rest seem a bit bland and samey. I wouldn't say it's one of the best of the 21st Century, creatively and artistically there's been much better released. But it is a good album.

21 sold so many because it crossed a shitload of genres. Everything lined up. And after years of mostly mass produced shit on the radio, people were ready for it.
Btw, old people aren't wanting to hear "kept his dick wet" in their music. Same with parents of 12 year olds I'd imagine. A huge mistake in my humble opinion (as far as the old people go) as Back To Black is a masterpiece and that song in particular is incredible.
As far as 21 goes, it most likely will be the last album to sell 10 million (11 million and counting as of today) copies in the US, so it will always be remembered and regarded highly. In other words, it is a beast of an album that will go down in history, whether you personally love it or hate it. And yes, it is one of the best albums of the 21 century. IMO.

I think over time with the hype gone my feelings have changed. It's a record that is wholly personal to Adeld that transcended boundaries and touched millions. I truly believe she never envisaged the success it would have and it never mattered it was an album she crafted for her.

Is it the best no is it good yes. The lyrics are personal and heartfelt the arrangements beautiful and her voice in point.

For me it falls short of an album like Back To Black, which is raw, honest and emotive uncomfortably so at times. 21 is a bit too polished often a bit dull it bland but is a strong record still and one that I think will stand strong 21 years from now.

Even ignoring the sales I'd say yes.

It's just not a bad or even average album in any way. The lyrics are raw and relateable, the production is slick and her voice is incredible.

I can listen to it whenever I want and not get tired of it.

I'm truly thankful that I do not believe this statement to be fact.

Lol. That sounds so damn arrogant I have to laugh. Sorry
Amy and Adele are both amazing. Whether one is better than the other is just an individual opinion. They are very different artists. Or were.

when the dust settles i believe only Adele & Amy W will have any lasting legacy from this century (so far), of mainstream artists. When the landfill site of history has claimed Rihanna, Katy Perry, Beyonce, Gaga etc. those two will still stand out

Remove 'Take it all' and the only real duffer 'Lovesong' and replace them with something livelier and 21 would have been a bona fide classic, as it it it's only a great album.

I've always thought X Factor 2010 built up Adele with the over use of Make You Feel My Love and the fact the contestants kept referring to the song as if it was an original song by Adele.

It might've helped drum up interest and anticipation of new material by Adele. She had performed Someone Like You on Jool's Holland in late 2010, then Rolling In The Deep went to radio and was like a breath of fresh air in the charts - there wasn't anything in the charts that sounded like RITD.

Then there was that performance at The Brit Awards which I remember watching and I was sat in silence listening to the song. I mean, lyrically it's just a typical song about a broken relationship but there's more to a song than its lyrics. It was one of those songs that captured the UK, then the rest of the world followed.

I also bought 21 a couple of days after the Brit Awards and thought it was a really strong album. The single choices were spot on and with the increase radio airplay Adele was unavoidable for the first six months of 2011 in which time 21 had managed to sell close to 3 million copies.

Then came the excitement of Adele doing the Bond theme after so much speculation and rumours. Skyfall came along and that helped boost sales of 21.

Regardless of what people think, there's no denying 21 just happened to come along at the right time. I guess word of mouth helped too, a case of "have you heard that song by Adele". I remember lending the album to a mate at work, and he bought a copy for himself when I expected him to just burn a copy off on his computer. lol

It might not be my overall fave album so far this century but it's definitely up there. For me personally, Back To Black by Amy Winehouse is the best album of the 21st century so far.

I do really like Adele but for me her music does not justify the massive success she has had, i do not think her music is that special, im not in any way knocking her but i do find her records extremely average. That is just my opinion though.

Hitastic says it well. Make You feel My Love playing on tv really set her up well to start the era. Then Jools. And the rest is history. It was the perfect storm of events that spanned a couple of years actually. Her live show was incredible and was so hard to get tickets to. The era just kept picking up steam. A year after release and the Grammys just propelled it again. 740k sales the week following the Grammys. That show was like an hours long commercial for 21. She looked great, was classy compared to the others, and sang beautifully without backing tracks. And she has no groups of stans that dislike her (aside from Gaga fans being asses for a minute on twitter). The likability factor counts. In a time of all the other pop girls, and when Amy was down and then gone, it left only Adele.

I'm still amazed that 21 achieved the level of success it did. Adele's debut album did pretty well, but it's not like there was huge anticipation or hype for her return in 2011. It was lightning in a bottle.

Definitely NOT one of the best. Generally albums that sell as well as that ( like Simply Red's Stars, James Blunts first album, Dido's first album) appeal very much to the middle ground of music taste and is bought by many who don't often buy cds or go to concerts. Bland would be a good word, rather than best. It's probably the background music of choice at many dull dinner parties.
Of course though it is all subjective and nobody's opinion on whether music is good or bad can be treated as fact.

Personally I think if you connect emotionally with lyrics you love 21 but if you just see music as entertainment or background noise you wont see the appeal ..Personally its in my top 3 but then I prefer lyrics and emotion over melody

If 21 is bland then are Rumours and Jagged Little Pill also bland.
