EastEnders - Stacey...
Stacey is probably one of my all time favourite soap characters, and Stacey is a pure soap legend! I was SO happy when I heard she was coming back, and it's what really got me excited about EastEnders again, along with the Carter's!
However, what I'm seeing right now just isn't Stacey, and she is just a shadow of her former self, which is pathetic as it was DTC who storylined for Stacey last time! Ok, so I'm not saying just repeat Stacey's first stint, but the character is just SO different now, and tbh I barely even enjoy watching her, which is a shame! I can't just let a character like Stacey be ruined! I feel like this is the same with Kat aswell in a way, but not as bad! Kat has redeemed herself, from her awful Kirkwood era! There's several problems with Stacey though... 1) She's all classy, and mature... Why? She was NEVER like that in her first stint, so why have they changed her character? Why is she suddenly in a secure job with nice dresses, and long hair, with make up etc...? I remember a Stacey who would happily walk around the square in a track suit, with her hair up, and not give a damn what she looks like... Fair enough, Stacey is older now, but why the transformation? Surely, they shouldn't just change a character? They didn't change Bianca when she first came back, so why Stacey? 2) Lily... Lumbering a kid on Stacey is bringing her down a lot IMO! Lily is a major issue, as she's preventing Stacey from getting certain types of storylines, it's as if the producer's have to be careful, because Stacey is a mother, and everything revolves around Lily, yes obviously it does, she is Stacey's daughter, but my point is that Lily shouldn't even be there in the first place! Perhaps an abduction storyline involving Ryan, until Liky has grown up? ah, idk, something like that... 3) Her soft voice... Why? She used to walk around the square like gob almighty, and wouldn't take no shit off anyone, now she treads on eggshells around everyone, and lives right up people's assholes, it's actually quite embarrassing to watch tbh! Also, the way she apologises to everyone... Stacey is a very stubborn person and doesn't usually back down, but seriously... It's like watching Alice Branning sometimes! 4) No proper family... I see she's being shoehorned into this (average) Kat and Alfie storyline, as she's the only proper family she has (minus Lily, who is a problem IMO), Lacey Turner works best with Gillian Wright and Jake Wood, there will always be a Max and Stacey connection, but there's only so much you can do with Max and Stacey... I say we get Alfie, Kat, Mo all at 23 again, and bring back Jean, Charlie, and hopefully Sean and Zoe, for Stacey! To give Stacey some decent material, and a family base, for Stacey to work with and connect with, and open Stacey's options on storylines! I have the perfect storyline planned out for Stacey involving her and a serial killer, and also involving the rest of the family a lot (If only I worked there! ![]() ) 5) Stacey's last stint (in perticular 2009/2010) is absolutely pissing over this 2014 that she's had! She had so much drama, and I don't see the point in bringing her back, if you're not going to live up to the expectations of her previous time on the show, infact they should be trying to give her better! So yes, that's what I think anyway... I know there's some people that will disagree and who think the character is better now, as she's calmed down a lot and hated her in her previous stint, but what we're seeing now just isn't the 'Stacey Slater ice skater', who stole the hearts of the nation... The Stacey I remember was always getting her fair share if drama, she'd get her fiesty, happy scenes, and her scenes where the camera zoomed into her face, and we had lots of close ups of Stacey crying, biting her nails, etc... And you could feel her pain... We had this back in February/March when she returned, but ever since her permanent return, it's just been poor! What Stacey needs is character development, new pathways, but keeping within the terms of the character, not changing her, and not changing her attitude or style, as they massively contributed to the Stacey's success! I just hope we can go back to the 2004-2010 Stacey soon, and that this key that she has, leads to something massive, and I hope she has a huge 2015 in store! All I'm seeing right now, is an extra, who is a shadow of her former self, and her involvement with the Carter's makes me cringe, as she should not being shoehorned into their storylines at all, she barely even knows them! What's everyone else think of this? Any other Stacey fans who are disappointed? |

I quite like Stacey at the moment, which says something given how much I absolutely despise each and every one the SlaterMoons.
She grew up and got a job because she had to, how else would she provide for her daughter? |

She's a murderer and she should never have returned, because of her March 2014 was for the most part horrible.

All of these things are character progression and are part of why I love Stacey as much as I do. She couldn't act like a chav forever.

I love this new Stacey. I like that she's got a career and is making a life for herself and Lily. It would have disappointing if she'd come back and just been making the same mistakes and getting into the same problems as before. Characters need to adapt and grow, and I really believe this one. You criticise her maturity, but I think that's just because she's older, and has responsibilities now. I'm sure 2015 will be the Stacey Show, and I'm enjoying seeing her integrate back into the square in a slightly more low key manner.
Also, the Lily thing is ridiculous. Abducted? Roxy is forever being criticised for forgetting about Amy. At least Stacey remembers she has a child.

I find her extremely irritating. I hope she's off our screens ASAP.

Working on the market like she did before, or maybe a barmaid or something? It's not so much the job, it's more the growing up that's the issue, as she's a different person now! And like you said, how else would she provide for her daughter? This is what I mean, Lily is getting in the way of Stacey's character! They've had to change Stacey purely because of Lily!

I'm liking the way they have reintroduced her. Very sensible not to make it 'The Stacey Show' from day one. After the Archie storyline she needed to come back having grown as a person. If she'd come back wreaking havoc in every episode that wouldn't have done her any favours with a section of the viewing audience. The way they have done it is obviously working as I've seen people say they couldn't stand her by the time she left in 2010 after Archie/Ryan but now like her again.

Stacey is my all time favourite character and I have to say that I think she's completely and utterly brilliant at the moment. I think it's absolutely fantastic to see the Queen of Drama herself playing a bit-part role, it's so refreshing.
Life and its challenges have softened her so it makes total sense that she has a more mature, level head now, and that's exactly what we need to see. She was always the best at character development. It's not changing, it's character development. She couldn't be that brash, gobby teenage troublemaker forever. I wouldn't change one single thing about her since she made her full time return. |

I wouldn't say she's classy and I wouldn't say she has a soft voice. She still has that whine on her.
But I like the more mature attitude. The character needs to have developed in someway in order to explore new sides of the character. As you say, they can't repeat her first stint but if they have to revisit certain elements of her first stint, such as her bipolar, it'll be interesting to see them from the perspective of a more grown up Stacey who is now a mother. They've already said that 2014 would be a slow reintegration for her and she would get her plots in 2015. That's a very good move. |

Becoming a parent changes most people as they have to grow up. Stacey has been through a lot and matured. I liked Stacey before and like her now too.

I think Stacey being back has been great so far and I didn't ever really care about her before.
Realistically, she has a kid, she was on the run for a few years with little help and then she went to prison for a few months after that. She has to have grown up in that time, She just wouldn't be the same person she was when she left. Besides, she has retained enough of her mouthiness to get her into trouble a few times anyway, Dean initially refused to give her a job because of it. |

Count me as one of the couldn't stand her by the time she left in 2010 but has been pleasantly surprised this time round camp.
She isn't a shadow of her former self, she has just grown up a lot. That is to be expected - she was 21 or 22 when she left? She is now mid twenties. People do change during those years, especially if they have a child and have had to deal with an illness like bi polar and being on the run. She had to calm down. If she'd carried on as she did before she'd have ended up getting arrested for causing an affray or similar and had her new identity blown. That new attitude has now set in. The -old' Stacey is still there, she has answered back and stood her ground when needed. She just doesn'( fly off the handle all the time, thinks about other people at least sometimes and is finally taking some responsibility for her own actions and decisions. Amen to it. I'd have hated it if she had come back the same self entitled, up herself, silly and abrasive little girl that left in 2010 or even worse a cartoon of her former self as arguably happened with Bianca, Kat and Alfie. |

When Bianca returned she was transformed into a 2D chav and undid lots of character development that hapoebed in her original stint!!

The only problem I have with Stacey is the high and mighty pedestal she seems to have been wedged on. Her behaviour in last night's episode was sickening, tbh.
