This is exactly my view as well. I HATE The Runnaway Bride with a passion, it's the one NuWho episode I can't bear to re-watch, it has me switching channels in a matter of minutes !

While I never liked Donna, and she is my least favourite NuWho companion by a long, long way, she didn't end up as bad as I thought she was going to be and I got used to her, was very glad she didn't stick around for more than one series though !!

I loved Donna, my favourite New Who companion and a million times better than awful Amy and risible River.

I must be one of the few people who loves The Runaway Bride.

I think it's actually the only Christmas episode I can re-watch time and again.

Donna's obviously the Marmite of NuWho companions...

She's my absolutely favourite of the lot - head and shoulders above all the others. In comparison I couldn't stand Amy, but that may be because (IMO) she had such a hard act to follow.

And I agree with the previous poster that Catherine Tate's performance in Turn Left is my all time favourite companion performance - in a large way because of how much Donna had grown by that point in the series. I can re-watch that episode over and over, and I never miss the Doctor. If that episode was made now with Clara, I seriously doubt I'd be so invested in her.

Donna is the best companion in NuWho and series four is the best series to date (imho obviously). I wasn't a fan of Catherine Tate and was really blah when she was announced but instantly she won me over and she if for me, head and shoulders above every other companion.

Her final episode will always be my number one tear jerker in who. I can't see anything surpassing it as upsetting who moments.

I was ready to give up on Dr Who as I hated RTD'[s vision of it.

So weird how different opinions can be amongst fans of the same show! I loved series 4, in a large way due to Donna, and I don't feel any other series or companion have been able to match it or her since (or before)

I found her bearable, Started badly but grew into the role, I thought the she was a bit cringworthy in her last episode tbh.

Her voice is annoying and I couldn't forget her as 'old Nan'.

I always thought her popularity was mainly due to the fact that they didn't go down the 'in love with the Dr' route with her character. That was a relief after Rose and Martha were in love with Tennant but other than that I wasn't overly keen on her.

Favourite new Who companion, didn't fall in love with the Doctor, wasn't whingy or self obsessed, strong personality.

I think this thread has fallen through a crack in the time war from about mid-2006 or so when she was first announced as the new companion

The fact she went from almost universally derided to many people's favourite companion shows how good a job she did.
Hell, if she'd just gone from hated to people saying "meh, she's ok" it would've been an amazing turnaround, so the change from almost 100% negative to around 95% positive shows she was an amazing actress.

There's always a snobbery about actors and actresses that originate in comedy roles in the industry.
The fact is comedians find it easier to adapt to dramatic scenes than those who were trained in "proper" acting do when they have a comedy scene *cough* Amy *cough*

Series 4 was just perfect who, the like of which we haven't seen again.
If only there was less Moon eggs and London forests then series 8 would've run it close

Those who had seen her before and who derided her did not change their minds. She may have won over a few neutrals or those who had never seen her before but you greatly exaggerate.

And as for claiming she is an "amazing actress" it was like watching Peter Glaze from Crackerjack trying to do serious parts when all he has ever done is music hall.

Seriously, and this is obviously just anecdotal too, I have a few friends who watch the show but aren't exactly hardcore fans of Who or indeed CT's comedy, and they were completely won over. They still occasionally mention Donna when I am boring them about the latest episode.

She challenged him, in a 'why are you doing that?' way rather than whinging or trying to be his boss. Martha was rubbish, her character was fairly dull and she just fell for the Dr, after a whole season of that with Rose it became annoying pretty quickly. After those two companions Donna was a nice change AND she was given some good material (which Martha wasn't).

You might want to read the whole thread before you make claims like that. Even posts on here completely contradict your point.

Clearly, you didn't like her to begin with, then still didn't like her after she became a companion. And therefor you think that is how it went down. That is not true. As evidenced right her, in this forum, on this thread.

I think this whole 'falling in love with the Doctor' thing tends to be overexaggerated. Rose and River were the only ones who could be classed as love interests and while Martha did have an unrequited crush, she did move on from it.

Amy had a MAJOR crush, Clara is his 'impossible girl' 'perfect for him' etc etc. He's had more female companions after him than not.

Amy didn't have a crush on him. She indolised him but she wasn't in love with him. Clara being the impossible girl doesn't make her a love interest either.

She tried to have sex with him on multiple occasions, maybe not love, but serious sexual attraction. Clara was his 'perfect' girl, as stated many times. They hinted there was an attraction multiple times too.

No. She's easily my favourite NuWho companion.

Personally, Season 4 is easily my favourite since the show returned. The fact she isn't the God awful Amy is reason enough to embrace her.
