SOAP - TV Series
Does anyone remember this infamous Soap-Comedy-Drama from the 70's??
OK - it was from the USA, but it was brilliant! It starred two sisters and their families - one rich, the other poor...etc. And it parodied everything that happened in soaps at that time - and in future times for that mattter! It was hilarious - Jessica Tate & Mary Campbell and their unconventional families ![]() They more or less covered everything that our soaps do now (apart from being abducted by aliens..................whoops Dynasty did that didn't they!!)

I loved it. I particularly liked Benson the butler. I didn't miss a single episode.

What a co-incidence that this comes up!
I bought the DVDs of seasons 1 and 2 of 'Soap' many years ago at JB HiFi (Australia) during a sale. I was thrilled as they were quite cheap and really enjoyed watching the series again. Unfortunately I never saw seasons 3 or 4 in stock at the store, so never saw those episodes. Season 2 ended with Burt being kidnapped by aliens. Literally last week I found seasons 3 and 4 at Savers (large thrift store chain) for just $8.00 each. So the last few days I've been getting through season 3. I realise I had seen some of the episodes before (Dutch moves in to the Tate home, Burt is replaced by a sex-mad alien double) but it was so many years ago, I really couldn't remember much about what was going on. I feared that season 3 might be a disappointment (especially as I knew Benson would soon depart) but it has been really funny. Jessica is in top form and they have successfully moved forward with a range of new storylines. Jody's baby is very adorable! Some people find Burt annoying but I like him and the alien possession / kidnapping is ideal for him. |

I loved the affairs that they used to have with each other (over and over). The silly story about the 'Moonies' (Recreated by Crossroads 1985) and the 'possessed baby' - which was quite eerie and comical at the same time!!
I missed Benson when he left - Doorbell rings: "Do you want me to get that?" Classic stuff - wish some channel would repeat it. (Drama? Yesterday?) |

What sort of SL's did they do? Is it worth a watch? It sounds like it would be a good watch.

You will be" |

Probably the best sitcom ever. Loved every second of it and for me there's been nothing to touch it since.
![]() ![]() ![]() Benson was my absolute hero.

Soap was a parody of soap operas so had soap style stories - including some really far fetched plots.
At the start the married Jessica and her daughter Corinne are having an affair with Peter, who is revealed to be the long lost son of Burt, who is the second husband of Jessica's sister Mary. Burt can't perform sexually, because he secretly knows he killed Mary's first husband (who was a baddie anyway). Mary's son Danny is in the mob; he asks to leave and is allowed to do so after one last job: killing Burt. Mary's other son Jody (Billy Crystal) is gay; Danny won't accept it and acts like Jody is only 'kidding around' with the gay stuff. Jessica's husband Chester is conducting (another) affair, this time with his secretary. She blackmails him into leaving Jessica. Peter is murdered and Jessica stands trial for the crime. Jody's quarterback boyfriend dumps him; Jody attempts suicide then has an affair with a (female) lawyer from Jessica's trial. Corinne returns to her true love Tim Flotsky: but he is a priest. Season two gets crazier. Tim leaves the church and marries Corinne but his mother (Doris Roberts, later in Everybody Loves Raymond) put a curse on their baby who is possessed by the devil. It is also revealed that Corinne is actually the illegitimate daughter of Jessica and Mary's long-lost brother. Corinne's (battleaxe) real mother returns and Corinne moves in with her but Corinne soon returns to the Tate household. Jessica and Chester's son Billy is kidnapped by the 'Sunnies' religious cult. Burt is kidnapped by aliens. |
