Should a soap do an alien invasion storyline?

How would you feel if for example a load of aliens came to invade Albert Square or Coronation Street etc?

Please don't give Stuart Blackburn any more ideas for silly storylines.

Yes, they could abduct Bryan Kirkwood from HO headquarters, but he'd probably enjoy that & use it as a storyline when he gets back to earth.

I believe the current version of Sharon on EastEnders is actually an alien doppelganger who has snatched her body. Surely the only explanation for her dreadful characterisation .

I heard the storyline is building up to a big alien invasion right in the middle of the Square on Christmas Day, where the real Sharon will beam herself down from a flying saucer and slay her alien clone . Think Independence Day with cockneys .

And it could take the Roscoes than that would be amazing.
It's only a matter of time before Kevin the alien returns to hollyoaks with his family to take over the loft.

HO had an alien character once. Wasn't an invasion or anything but a character turned up claiming to be a alien.

A classic Eighties soap cliffhanger featuring Emma Samms who recently appeared in BBC's Tumble.

90's cable channel L!VE TV (for those too young to remember it was basically London Live with topless women) had a bargain basement soap called Canary Wharf which featured aliens in it's finale where they came and stole a skyscraper in a nod to The X Files which was super popular at the time. As awful as that show was, the cast featured many actors who went on to bigger things including Emmerdale's Anna Brecon, EastEnders Claire Wilkie, Casualty's Tristan Gemmill and Bad Girls' Kika Mirylees as a parody of Janet Street Porter.

I'm sure had ITV's Night and Day or Channel 4's Springhill continued, aliens would have figured in their plots at some point.

Yes with Danny Dyer because he believes in them.

Had Sunset Beach continued I am sure that this would have happened....

I think it could work but it would have to be written well. Characters would need to act in character, the writing would have to be good, and the story would either have to be resolved, or, exposed as a dream. It also couldn't be a long running story, and unless the aliens were human then they couldn't stay permanently. The only other thing is a character vanishes as their exit story or is abducted for a few weeks and claims to have been kidnapped by aliens.

Would be a good story for someone going on maternity leave (its certainly no more absurd than some of the other maternity leave stories we've had)

THIS ^^^ Yeah plenty of scope there - as long as it was a fantasy'Dream sequence, they would get away with it! Then come back to reality!!!

Lots of soaps have done similar things.....Sunset Beach, The Colbys and even our home-grown Crossroads!!

And strangely enough - none of them are still on air.

Have many of you seen Paul with Simon Pegg? I can imagine an English cockney alien appearing and doing crazy things with only Mick Carter being able to see it and everyone thinks he's mad! It would be brilliant if a spaceship landed on Coronation Street and an alien kidnaps Sean Tully and he's never to be seen again! Emmerdale wouldn't do a good alien story. Hollyoaks could do an alien story, it wouldn't be any madder than the Sienna / Dodger / Nico / Patrick and Maxine storylines. Hopefully the aliens would kidnap Patrick and Sienna and take them to another planet. Great thread by the way

Well, I bet Max Branning has given a few Albert Square residents an anal probe...

No, how childish. Although that's something Bryan Kirkwood would do for Hollyoaks once he's completely run out of rehashed ideas and decides to scrape the barrel until it peels.

Hollyoaks did an alien storyline - with a guy claiming he was an alien and needed to get back to his home planet. I think it turned out he'd been abused and brought up in care.

It did have the potential for a good story, but the producer at the time had a habit of dropping storyline/characters frequently, which made it hard to follow.

I think he just disappeared, but somehow got a job for Elliott with NASA???

Stupid story in the end...
