Like a total moron I didn't back up my laptop files, and it died.

My new laptop will not work with my iPod Classic. I've already lost my itunes library through restoring the iPod, trying to get it to work. I've reinstalled itunes, I've followed every fix I find online. I get a variety of error messages,

-The iPod cannot be synced. The required folder cannot be found.
-The iPod cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified.
-Attempting to copy to the disc failed. The disc is not available.
-Disc can not be read or written to

Some messages happen in response to things I've tried to change in device manager or in 'this pc'.

I'm so hacked off. To rub salt in the wound I bought a Sansa Clip last week which crashes Media Player as soon as it loads. I'm starting to feel like this laptop just hates music!!

I have completely exhausted my knowledge in this area and got nowhere.

My questions are 1) Does it seem like the fault is in my computer software or the devices? 2) Should I attempt installing something like Rockbox on the Classic and just bypass Itunes altogether? Would that stand a better chance of working than endlessly wrestling with Itunes?

I rockbox'd my iPod Classic and it was the best thing I ever did with it.

No more Itunes, mp3s sound better and it can play FLAC files.

Just drag and drop your files over, no more waiting for it to sync.

Just watch out during installation as it is a slightly tricky thing but mine went OK. The Ipod can take a while to show up as a drive (1min or more)

The Classic version of Rockbox is not Alpha yet but it does work.

Have you tried a third-party application like MediaMonkey?

Actually, I hadn't heard of that. I just had a look. I think that might be worth a go first, thanks!
