Backing up numbers on my mobile phone?
The Cricketer

I'm moving my network supplier from O2 to EE

The number porting process should be complete in 24 hours.

How to ensure my phone contact are easily transferred to the new SIM?

My phone doesnt take an SD card. I heard it can be done via my Google account but I dont understand how. My phone is a Motorola

Any advice, thanks

Depending on the phone you have, your numbers are unlikely to be on the sim.

If you have a motorola android phone with a google account - it is likely your phone is configured to store your contacts within google. Logon to google and check the contacts section for you numbers.

What version of Android and model of phone do you have? There are easy ways to check what contacts are on the SIM and to import them onto the phone memory but there are subtle variations between versions.

Go to settings - accounts - Google - then tap your email address that will be shown at the top, you can tick people if it not already ticked then tap the menu button & tap sync now. By default it should back up your contacts/people if you have auto sync turned on.

When you get your new phone, charge it first then power it on & go through the first run setup wizard & once you have entered you google account details your contacts will sync to the new phone. Just make sure you have "backup my data & automatic restore ticked on your old phone & also on your new phone.

Not sure it will be exactly the same on the Moto but on my HTC One if you go into People then tap the Menu (three dots) button one of the options is SIM Capacity which shows the number of contacts stored on the SIM. If it is zero then you don't have to bother. Just slap your new SIM in and go

If it is more than zero there should be an option to Import contacts. Either directly off the menu or via Manage Contacts then Import/Export. You should then get the option to Import From SIM and should be able to chose either your Google account or the Phone memory to store them on. I'd stick them on the phone.

Do I do this on my phone or on my laptop/PC?

Sorry do it on your phone, when you do the first run setup on your new phone it will download your contacts & apps so you will find some apps will be as they were on your old phone but some others you will need to change their settings to what you want.

The main thing is that your old phone has the backup my data option ticked & the automatic restore ticked as well, that way your contacts & app & some app data is saved to your google account, when you setup your new phone it will them download that backup.

Can we just clear one thing up here?

Are you getting a new phone or just swapping SIMs over?

If you are just swapping SIMS then chances are you don't need to do anything. Mind you always useful to have a back-up so saving the contacts to Google won't entirely be a waste of time.
