Older Campmates

I don't understand why older people even bother to go into the jungle. Ever since they started to insist on putting in the young reality stars & american "models" the older ones don't stand a chance! They get no airtime & no bushtucker votes. What hope would the likes of Tony Blackburn or Joe Pasquale have these days? I miss the days when the prog was about who survived it best & not about who screamed the most, had the most arguments, had a fake "romance" or did nowt at all & went under the radar.

Rant over!

Michael and Edwina are getting plenty of airtime and coming over well.

Not sure about that. The older camp mates usually do well in this show. And there's a reason for that - the viewers demographic . Sorry Twitter fans, that rules you lot out

Age is irrelevant. It just depends on the individual concerned. Over the years many older people have done well...

It was good to see Vicki get some decent airtime in last night's show.
She came across as quite prominent as a campmate. But from the way she had been edited out from the start up until now you wouldn't think so.

People like Michael and Vicki aren't boring, as some on here have accused them of, they simply haven't been given the level of airtime which other campmates have been lucky enough to be given.

I recently watched some of the episodes from 2007 and the older contestants absolutely dominate the series. The ultimate top two Biggins and Janice were 58 and 53 respectively, while the other big hitters early on included Rodney Marsh (63), Lynne Franks (59) and John Burton Race (50). Most of the younger celebrities barely featured until later on, though I guess there is a point that the likes of Gemma Atkinson and J from Five ended up outlasting the bigger and older personalities.

I said much the same on a different post - and you are dead right.

I think the older camp mates tend to be 'slow burners' for the reasons you have given. However, they start to come into their own as the numbers are reduced and they get more airtime and their popularity increases as they are generally articulate, reasonably grounded, have had interesting lives and have something to say.

Thanks to everyone who took time to respond to my rant! In my defense, I must mention that I am an oldie myself & should probably had my horlicks & gone to bed long before I placed this post at about 2.00 am. However, I agree that I should have qualified my comment & added that I meant that the older ones get little coverage early in the series although some come into their own later on. Anyway, thanks again.
