When did One Direction become the 'biggest boyband in the world'?
What made them become the biggest, and who did they replace as the 'world's biggest boyband'?

when? When they really took off in America ..which always eluded previous British boy bands. There were no globally successful boybands (ie household names on both sides of the Atlantic) prior to them since Backstreet Boys and NSYNC in the early Noughties

Yeah I'd agree that they didn't have anybody to replace. 'N Sync had split, Backstreet Boys had seen much lower success and nobody really came around to replace them. Boybands had really died out over there.
The Wanted had limited success with GYC but that was about it. As for when, I think it happened pretty quickly for them. America was the key. |

Yes, US is the main factor. That is actually the only thing that they managed that other successful boybands in the UK couldn't. I think they were just in the right place at the right time really.
Plus, it was a much easier task for them than it was for older boybands - the social media like Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and Youtube helped them A LOT to get where they are - I highly doubt they would have cracked America without those tools. The fans did half of the job for them by sharing their X Factor performances, video tour diaries that X Factor contestants have etc.. and of course not to mention the strong promo Simon arranged for them, thanks to his success with reality shows, no doubt he has strong connections there. . |

In this continuous rush to explain the mechanisms of the music biz, you all seem to forget that pop music is also about pop music. |

At least three class pop singles helped a bit as well.

Well, I didn't say they cracked America ONLY thanks to things I mentioned, I said it helped A LOT - if anything, I think they wouldn't crack America so quickly. Also, don't forget the X Factor also helped - people got to know them week to week, they already formed a fanbase during the show and they shared all those videos, performances, etc.
Of course it is also about the music, actually their debut single opened the doors - other singles they released from their 1st album didn't have such an impact. Of the XF winners. I prefer Little Mix but you have to hand it to 1D, they are actually pretty good. |

They hit a gap in the market with perfect timing, backed up with a catchy as hell first single.

The thing is that a lot of the 'marketing' factors - appearances on X Factor etc were available to other XF artists who have failed to sustain. The factors that help 1D are the hit singles and the image. And in a real sense for successful pop acts (since the 50s) those have always been the key factors.

The Wanted were their only competition in the UK, and they split up (sorry...went on hiatus)
