What Happened to Britney's Career in the UK?

What's happened to Britney's career in the UK? There was a time when her albums sold well, and her singles regularly made the top ten. Her last two albums haven't done very well. Femme fatale peaked at number eight and has been certified Silver while Britney Jean peaked at number thirty-four and hasn't been certified at all. Her last top five solo hit single was back in 2008. I thought the success of Scream & Shout might have helped her out in 2013 but that wasn't the case. I can understand why older pop stars like Madonna and Kylie are currently in a bit of a commercial slump, but Britney is only in her early 30s. What happened? Lack of promotion?

She's no longer relevant. Even if she had a good song like Toxic or Womanizer again it probably wouldn't sell. Her contemporary/rival Christina Aguilera is in the same boat.

Her last UK single reached No. 7. She's not completely irrelevant. She can have a big UK comeback, if she wants it. She probably doesn't.

She probably lost all credibility when she had the breakdown and shaved off all her hair!..................................... who wants to put money into her pot when she is like that!...............

What an insensitive thing to say. She was obviously a manic depressive at that point, and studies show that one can never 100% put those kinds of mental health issues behind them forever.

She doesn't do any relevant promo anymore. Even if she didn't want to come to the UK to perform, doing the big US award shows would give her publicity over here but she doesn't do it.

But seeing as she's currently banking $1 million a week and from next year will be paid almost half a million per show I don't think she cares.

There's always someone younger that comes along. It's happened since music began. Her audience has grown up and have other priorities other than buying music..... Kids, mortgage, jobs. The record buyers, 14 to 25 ish want someone younger. She's no longer special.

I don't think she cares no more. She seems she just wants to be with her kids and all this Vegas thing is her people wanting her to do it.

Like I said about Kyles and Madge in the past, Britney has nothing left to prove anymore she's made her name and has a loyal fanbase whom are dedicated. Every single superstar goes through this point in thier career, where the suffer a slump. I just don't understand why people care about it? If your a fan just enjoy the music!

Not funny! Knowing what she's been through. I think now she's got more control with her future albums she might get that fire back. Plus she needs to put herself out there and promote. Britney is still relevant!

She was having hit singles and lots of top 10 singles up until her X Factor performance..it all kind of went downhill from there..also she isn't that old for a popstar really,Madonna and Kylie were having hit singles into their 40's?

Not funny She still has millions of fans around the world (just go onto any fan forum such as Exhale or Universe) and her lingerie and perfume lines are very popular. In fact I read somewhere that Britney's perfume line makes a lot of money (and it's nice perfume too ) I thought she looked really happy when promoting the Intimate Collection.

She's not totally irrelevant in music any more. Work Bitch reached No 7 in the UK even though it was released two months after it was released everywhere else in the world (even here in Ireland WB was released in mid-September 2013 after it leaked). The song is pretty well known and loads of people I know use the phrase "you better work bitch!" I'm always using it. The problem is lack of promotion but I don't think she's allowed to perform anywhere else but Vegas. Britney Jean was a very disappointing album and that might have had something to do with it plus promotion for it was overshadowed by Vegas. If the Giorgio Moroder collaboration and the first single from album 9 are good then it's possible she could have a big comeback again. She really needs to ditch will.i.am for album 9 and go urban/R&B. What I would love is a really dark, urban album (which some would say would he her Rated R). I wouldn't write her off just yet.

I personally will remain a fan no matter what. I enjoy the music and it doesn't matter to me what other people think of my music tastes.

Femme Fatale was and still is a fantastic album, it did well in America and all the singles from it did well there.

Unfortunately UK radio dropped her like a hot brick with that album. Radio one didn't play 'till the world ends' I have no idea why as it's a fantastic pop tune.
Just typical of UK radio basically to drop artists of a certain age now. Like sheep only following the next big thing . songs only seem to chart decently now if they have been hammered on radio .

Didn't stop her being the biggest selling female artist of her generation or the last artist to sell 100 million albums. It's also not stopping her making bank in Vegas.

Femme Fatale is one of her best albums, but Blackout will always be my favourite. FF kinda feels like the fun, summery sequel to the dark and raw Blackout (which is flawless btw). Till The World Ends is a great pop tune. Even my dad likes it! I don't know why UK radio refused to play it. That's one of the reasons I don't listen to mainstream radio. They seem to play the same 20 songs on a loop all the time. Dreadful! I just listen to music I like and I don't care what anyone else thinks. Let the sheep follow what's considered "trendy".

Exactly. Sometimes I wish she had released Original Doll as that would have shown a different side to Britney. People would have seen her more as a credible artist. Some of her unreleased songs are very personal. I'll post links to a few tomorrow.

Britney has never been massive in the UK though. just look at her UK album chart positions

BOMT, Oops - #2 [not bad]
Britney - #4
ITZ - # 13 !!!
Blackout - #2 [im surprised at that because she did practically zero promotion]
Circus - #4
Femme Fatale - #8
Britney Jean - embarrassing #34

Also shes done 7 world tours and only 2 included the UK. and I found it quite annoying that last year her management team actually decided to bother doing UK promotion for BJ and obviously thought the UK was gunna think 'OMG How lucky are we? Britneys actually bothering with us woopee!!! we must all buy BJ even though for the past 10 years we've been completely abandoned'.

I am a big Britney fan although I didn't love BJ. I just get annoyed the uk always gets forgotten about by her team

The peak is not important, that's just how it did in one specific week! What matters is sales and certifications

BOMT - 4x Platinum
Oops - 3x Platinum
Britney - Platinum
ITZ - Platinum
Blackout - Gold
Circus - Platinum
Femme Fatale - Silver
BJ - (none)

Obviously there's a decline in recent years (which happens to everyone, and the lack of promotion didn't help) but you can't say she has "never been massive". Also, she's more of a singles artist than an albums artist anyway.

After her horrible X Factor performance, everyone here lost interest in her.

This.
Madonna & Kylie are really charismatic stars & performers I've always found Britney to be inane. She had a few good years but her appeal was mainly her looks, youthful sexiness & her unusual voice. Unfortunately time & life experience is almost guaranteed to put paid to that. Personally I doubt the result would've been any different even if she'd not had mental health problems.
Frankly she lacked originality and once the big hits dried up her popularity declined.
She's still big in the USA I understand, but I think she's more of a cultural fit there than here. She's always seemed very American somehow compared to other artists.

It's pretty lazy to assume her sales suffered because of her breakdown, when in fact, it probably benefited her for a time. 'Gimme More' and 'piece of me' did very well over here during that period. People bought into bad girl britney.

For that short time, it actually became somewhat cool to like Britney's music for probably the first time ever. I remember being at school and everyone having those songs playing in their cars.

Her problem now is that she's lost her edge. Plain and simple. With each album since the comeback she's been progressively more boring, something she never was in the past. She's in a bit of an awkward phase in her career in that she's still young, but not really young enough to get away with some of the things that she used to.

Her and her team need to reinvent her if she wants to stay relevant but to be honest I don't think she's really bothered. She's happy enough doing her vegas nostalgia show and raking in her millions and I don't really blame her.
