At a convention yesterday Peter Capaldi gave his opinions on Doctor Who Live: the Next Doctor.

He also discussed how Doctor Who should not be 'merchandise led'.

Did anyone see Peter Davison and Murray Gold this morning on BBC Breakfast? They were discussing the national tour of Doctor Who Symphonic concerts. I hope they're heading near me...

Would anyone else like to see Capaldi eventually replace Moffat?

It would be an interesting story for the show if the lead actor left to become the executive producer.

It was pretty much obvious in his body language.

Well I can't say I'm surprised. The show was a bit tacky.

I'm sure I read the whole idea was a spur-of-the-moment thing because they found out it was about to be leaked by a newspaper. I don't think there was a plan to have such a show before that. They even changed the BBC1 schedule to accommodate it.

Tickets for the Studio audience were sent out a few weeks ahead of broadcast under the guise of a show looking at Doctor Who fandom.

Edit
Just checked and it was 9 days between the announcement of the fake show and the real show being broadcast, thought it was longer.

So the show was certainly planned well in advance it's possible the broadcast date was changed late on (I don't know) as Capaldi's name did appear on the bookie's lists a few days before the show.

I believe Night of the Doctor was released earlier than intended due to Paul McGann's involvement leaking.

Agreed. He seemed totally out of his comfort zone.

And tedious. Even my 5-year-old, who had been excited about seeing the new Doctor, asked to switch to something else before the reveal.

It was, and fortuitously on his birthday!

Has he ever written anything? No matter how much of a fan someone may be, you can't have an inexperienced lead writer. Or do you mean as a non-writing showrunner?

He also fears "the Hartnell chat"

"He fears being called in by the producers or taken to dinner and having “the Bill Hartnell chat” (ie being told he has to leave the show)."

I think this sort of happened in the 70s with Tom Baker.
In his mind, at least

And well, Capaldi is a professional. He'll do what he's told, live shows, world tours, glooping, all part of the day job for a time lord

He's actually not that great at live interviews anyway... Watching his body language any time anyone does an interview with him live in front of an audience and he's always slightly turned away from the interviewer... I just think he's actually quite shy in that respect. He's not a spotlight kind of guy and he has strong principle about his craft.

Yes. But I don't see why the Executive Producer has to write so many episodes each series. Letts and Hinchcliffe didn't.

I agree I thought it was an awful idea anyway and it was probably worse in reality

"Bad" doesn't even begin to cover it.

It was so bad that even Zoe Ball took the opportunity to threaten Moffat with a live link-up to One Direction at the DB Q&A
