Fortunately the Doctor sonicked their link-up so they couldn't hear each other!

I guess gunging would also be appropriate.

Capaldi got his in his very first episode in the pit of disgustingness

Well he wrote as well as directed the short film "Franz Kafka's It's A Wonderful Life" for which he won the Best Short Film Oscar.

He wrote as well as starred in the film Soft Top, Hard Shoulder which won Best Film in the Scottish BAFTA awards in 1993, and also won the Audience Award at the London Film Festival.

He also wrote as well as presented the highly acclaimed (and hilarious) spoof documentary about the British film industry, Cricklewood Greats.

He has however said that he finds writing much harder than acting; and scripting episodic drama is, of course, a whole different ball game.

ETA: oops I missed the post upthread which I now see already linked to this info. Still, here it is on page, so to speak, for those who also missed or did not follow the link.

^No, thats what SHOULD have happened.
Instead, we got John Nathan-Turner who oversaw the show's demise from it's golden age to the unwatchable tripe it became before it's cancelation in 1989.

Or possibly they're giving the idea a rest, or not tying themselves into making it a regular thing but just now and then as an extra. It's fantastic fun but there's only so many times they can do more or less the same format without it getting 'samey', or thinking up a new approach every few years and the time, effort and expense needed by the production team would be a big distraction from making the show itself.
