Well he wrote as well as directed the short film "Franz Kafka's It's A Wonderful Life" for which he won the Best Short Film Oscar.
He wrote as well as starred in the film Soft Top, Hard Shoulder which won Best Film in the Scottish BAFTA awards in 1993, and also won the Audience Award at the London Film Festival.
He also wrote as well as presented the highly acclaimed (and hilarious) spoof documentary about the British film industry, Cricklewood Greats.
He has however said that he finds writing much harder than acting; and scripting episodic drama is, of course, a whole different ball game.
