I can't understand why someone would pre order a dvd containing one episode they don't even know if they will like yet.

Anyway, I'll be hoping that they sort out the releasing properly once more and that the episode is included on the series 9 dvd as has been standard for most series. I would only ever consider getting this single version if the episode is brilliant and series 9 itself is so abysmal that it's box set is not worth buying, which obviously I hope is not the case with series 9.

I can't understand why someone would think a series that hasn't aired is abysmal! ;o)

If your referring to my post I said IF series 9 is abysmal and added that I hope that won't be the case.

The awkward thing is that the Christmas special isn't being filmed or produced as part of Series 9 to our knowledge...in fact it was more likely the thirteenth episode of Series 8, so breaking a tradition since 2005 in that it follows the series before it, rather than preceding the series after it.

From the title alone it'd seem odd to start a box set that won't be released for a whole other year with an episode called 'Last Christmas', the point even more justified if it happens to be Clara's final episode.

And with the Volume/Vanilla releases no longer bringing in a little extra money for them I can see them trying to get away with sticking to the series box sets but selling the Christmas specials seperately from now on.

It's a weird situation now - with the seasons ending in November from now on, the Christmas episode feels more like a finale/epilogue to the preceeding run rather than a stand-alone/taster for things to come. It makes so much more sense for it to be on the boxset for the peceeding season (especially if the rumours of the Christmas episode actually serving as the finale to S9's arc prove to be true). But I don't see the BBC wanting to put out a boxset in early January when everybody is penny-pinching and they've missed on the potential Christmas sales.

Given that the box-sets are the same size as normal DVD cases now I wouldn't be opposed to orphaned releases as it won't look to weird on the shelf.

I'll still wait for the announcement of what's on the S9 boxset before splashing out on Last Christmas, though

Previews suggest "Last christmas" continues themes of series 8;fairytale heroic figures and believing in them etc etc...
Dont think i could wait til series 9 for it to be released as dvd!

Release date 23rd March according to amazon. Got caught last year buying time of the doctor mainly just to complete the matt smith era and lo and behold it comes out again on the 50th anniversary boxset. This time I will just keep an off air recording and see what happens later this year unless there is an unmissable extra feature on thd dvd which I doubt.

Regarding selling the series box set to include the Christmas special, the BBC could have it on pre order from the day the actual series ends and then post on Christmas eve meaning people will get it 3-5 days after boxing day if they order it by the 23rd December.
Anyone else buying it would get it very soon after.
This would mean it was in the Christmas shopping season anyway even if people don't actually get it on Christmas day! Which would have to just work as the Christmas episode needs to broadcast before the home media release of course!

It would be hopped that the BBC shop would be packing the boxsets up and putting them aside for collection by Royal mail so that they can all be despatched on Christmas eve morning!

Well, I guess people are collectors. I know I was during the Russell era, then I realised you could watch episodes online and I didn't really care for the DVD extras. Although I do miss my sick days from school where I used to lie in bed with my sick tissues and watch a couple DW DVDs.

Us old fogies prefer an actual physical product rather than a download. I am not going to buy this. Going to make my own copy with the off air recording and wait and see if it ends up on the s9 set.

Having watched since Troughton's day, I think I qualify as an old fogey. But I tend to download and stream everything these days. I rarely buy DVDs or BluRays any more because I never watch the extras. Working in TV, it feels too much like work ploughing through commentaries where we learn what the tea-lady did on set.

I have official releases of every other Dr Who episode on blu/dvd/CD and would probably get it even if I didn't like it, for the sake of having a complete run.

Me too, although I now wish I had never bought the stand alone DVD of Deep Breath as I now have the box set of the last series and of course it is included in that. Same as The Time of the Doctor which includes the previous Christmas specials as well. Clever marketing by the Beeb I think, make people pay for things twice !.

I found it astonishing that they bothered to release Deep Breath as a standalone DVD but haven't bothered to release Series 8 as 'Part One' and 'Part Two' as was the case with previous series. For those of us who buy the volume/vanilla DVD's, we now have a very untidy looking collection *shakes fist* - Series 8 is now only a quarter of the size of the other series on the shelf! *shakes fist again*

Will be getting the 'Last Christmas' episode on DVD. Didn't think it was all that, really, but I'll still get it. To complete my collection, if anything.
