Far Too Much Ageism
Cats_Eyes
06-12-2014
On any game show where people take sides and have favourites - which we all do - there is always a degree of ageism and when it does occur it is mostly delivered with particularly nasty comments to go with it and often also in reference to "sexual" matters.

This current series is without a doubt the worst I have seen - mainly because Edwina is in the camp and that because many people dislike her politics. But I have noticed that,in the last two or three nights, as Mel seems to become less popular, there are more and more comments connected with her age aimed at her also - and she is only 44 !

All this is precictably depressing especially as and just as predictably depressing is the converse view that if you are young all is forgiven and, worse, condoned. Jake is to me little more than a "sex pest" but when some people question this others, effectively decry the poster as good as calling them prudish saying he is only doing what any young, red -blooded male would do.

Although both Mel and Edwina are in the last four it is only because they are both strong-willed women - but because of what I said earlier I am sure neither of them will win. But also because of what I said earlier, although Jake is a bit vacuous and certainly vain - there is every chance he WILL win.

Anyway - age is NOT a disease- it's a fact of life - and you are only as old as what you feel so fair play to Edwina and others who don't want to grow old gracefully !

I called Mel 'a young lady' and got stick for it. You can't win on here.

I'm not a fan of Mel but to keep chucking nasty comments with regards to age - and that goes for Edwina also - is ridiculous and even more so with Mel.

I would not exactly call her a "young lady" be3cause she is not - but she is hardly "old"

And notwithstanding any of that age should NOT have a bearing on anything.

Typo error - must be my age.

There are some qualities of Edwina to be admired. However, on the subject of treating the sexes equally, I would say if Michael Burke had said the same things and did the same things to Nadia as Edwina has said and done to Jake and Jimmy, he most certainly would not be patted on the back for ' not growing old gracefully'. His behaviour would be considered disgraceful and there would be a public outcry. I detest ageism and sexism, but sometimes I feel it is discussed in some areas, yet ignored in others. Equal treatment for both sexes should mean just that.

I See strengths in Edwina, Jake and Mel, but faults too. foggy for the win!

Everybody ages. Those making comments now will soon be facing the same ageist remarks themselves.

So true, and they will only have themselves to blame.

Are you talking about me? I know that somebody posted what you said and I replied "If you can call 44 young". But I wasn't giving anybody any stick.
In fact in a later post I said that I hoped that 44 was seen as young nowadays.
