Hi guys

I've seen similar posts, but not this exact question, so please help me out.

I have one main living room with 2 cables from the dish and I'd like to put a FreeSat PVR in there.

We have a second lounge where I'd like to put a FreeSat box with the one sat cable in that room. We would prefer no hard disk on this one.

I'd like to be able to watch programmes recorded on the PVR in the second lounge. Therefore two Freesat boxes, one is a PVR, able to watch saved programmes on either box.

So is there a PVR FreeSat box that can act as a "server / streamer" and one that can watch the "Stream" over the local network?

Also preferably both boxes would do iplayer, itv player etc but not essential.

How are you going to save programmes on the box with no hard disk ?

If you can find them a pair of Foxsat-hdrs running the custom firmware free add on software and cross mounted using the CF nasmount package will do what you want.

Sloppy wording on my part. I'd like to only record in one place and watch the recordings in both places to save "wrong box" syndrome....

Your solution sounds fairly technical to the uninitiated - especially the "CF Nasmount" bit but I'll have a google around...

Would a DLNA based solution be feasible with the main PVR acting as DLNA server accessed from the DLNA client in the remote TV? Both devices would need to be connected to your home LAN to do this.

If I can interpret correctly what I think the the OP requires then Humax Freesat <freetime> series boxes would do the job.

Main room HDR-1000S twin recorder with DLNA server feature and a HB-1000S (hard drive-less) in the second room which can access content using DLNA. You would need the Wi-Fi dongles as well unless you are able to run Ethernet cables to your router.

The freetime boxes don't currently have DLNA servers only clients so until and if Humax bring out a DTCP-IP server like the HDR FOX T2 has I'm afraid that wouldn't work.

How about using a Triax Tri-Link or similar and a simple aerial UHF connection and magic eye betwee the PVR and the second room.

My bad, when I read the info. on the Humax site I assumed it worked just like HDR-1800T Freeview recorder.

CF refers to the Custom Firmware. This is written by a team lead by a guy called Raydon who have really transformed the old Humax FoxSat HDR. The Custom Firmware does not replace the Humax software, rather it runs along side it and adds extra extremely useful features. The package is very easy to install and once you have used it you will not look back. I am not allowed to give direct links to other forums on here but search for freesat in another forum with AV in their name and you will get it. Also there more information on the CF on the forum dedicated to all things Humax (again seek and ye shall find).

I only have one FoxSat but can stream saved programmes to my iPhone or my daughters' iPads either to watch there and then or saved to view later (i.e. on the train commuting to work) using 3rd party apps (on the phone) such as VLC for iOS. Also, because the custom firmware allows the unit to run as a DLNA server, my daughter can access the hard drive with her smart TV in her bedroom. One thing you should know is that HD programming is encrypted on the recording box. However there is a patch available (search for Nowster's patch and you should find it easily enough) that disables the encryption on all recordings made after the patch is installed (there is no way of de-encrypting old recordings in the library). This patch is VERY easy to install.

Before you ask, the CF only works on the original HDR not the newer FreeTime boxes. The HDR has been discontinued for a while now, so you will need to find a second hand one if you decide to go down this route. The good news is that they are fairly reliable units (but if you get one I would advise replacing the hard disk, if you can work a screwdriver you will be to do that, it's a piece of cake). Any hard disk up to 1TB can be installed in the HDR and it will format it automatically.
