I'm hearing lots of different versions of this song, but which is your favourite? Mine is the Luther VanDross version as it is very soulful and smooth

Leaving the obvious ones, here's my favourite 11 from the 371 versions I've got (don't ask ). Couldn't get it to 10:

Beres Hammond
Culture Beat
Lady Antebellum
Partridge Family
Rose Polenzani
Sara McLachlan
Starflyer 59
Take 6
Toby Keith
Vince Vance and The Valiants
Yolanda Williams

Judy Garland
who sung it originally.

I can't believe she wasn't even acknowledged in the poll.

Mine is too, her voice on that is so so beautiful.

I like loads of versions of this song so it would be hard to pick a second favourite! All the ones listed in the poll I enjoy too - and I agree that Judy should have been included in the poll, I love hers too <3

Judy Garland, obviously.

The Tori Amos version is also sublime.

Ditto on both counts. Kind of ridiculous that the OP didn't include the original artist as a listed option.

Ella Fitzgerald

There's something I'm not sure about with this though........I heard a version of the song by Ella in a coffee shop and it was slow and soulful and wistful and it seemed to be built around the looking back to days of yore......

But I bought the Ella Christmas Album and it seemed a different song on there......upbeat and jolly. That's the version that seems to be on Youtube

I wonder if she recorded it more than once or maybe the coffee shop one was off a live session or something.......

Haven't a clue here. I've got one version, the one on the Christmas Album (originally 'Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas' - 1960) and don't recall another one.
That's the only one her discography mentions, and I've not seen any live recordings either.

that's the one I've got as well........but it just sounded a bit different

maybe the one I heard in the coffee shop was someone who just sounded very like Ella Fitzgerald........

I think it should really be sung as a sad song like the original.......not the more upbeat version that performers adopted from the 50s onwards !

I'm sure you can tell the difference but, long shot, it wasn't Doris Day, was it?

I voted for Luther Vandross but it is definitely between him and Frank Sinatra.
