How do you access Cortana?
rewind
10-12-2014
I bought my Mum a Lumia 520 (I think!) earlier this year and was wondering how she goes about getting access to Cortana? It is unlocked and she is on 3 and I believe she has the latest software.

Thanks.

Thanks. Will give it a go. Out of interest, what software version does she need to have?

Needs to be running Lumia Cyan.

You can get it if you change the region settings apparently. Otherwise you will have to wait for update 1 Denim, sometime in the new year for the 520.

What call100 said, my apologies I took it as face value as my friends 520 has it enabled with Cyan but on listening it sounds like the Cortana from Halo so he must of set it to the US settings.

The UK version hasn't been enabled with voice activation yet either, for those phones with the capability. Hopefully they will do that soon. I have the Lumia 830 with Denim and I have Cortana, but, you have to touch the mic button to ask her anything.
That said, she does save some time with a lot of tasks...

I have it on my 1020. UK version. Works "fine". Although I am on the developer preview

Kinda useless feature, but then I never saw the point of Siri on the iPhone either.

Got it on my new 735 it came installed. It does have some useful features e.g. "Take me home" opens the Sat Nav with directions to home (Also works for other contacts e.g. Take me to Daves) or "Remind me to buy eggs when I am at Tescos next" does as it says and "Remind me to ask Mum about Christmas when she calls" and a note appears on screen when she calls. Oh and asking to "do an impression" results in some funny ones!!

Any feature of anything is pretty useless if you can't find a use for it. Cortana is useful in a lot of areas. I guess She'll be better once the voice activation is implemented in the UK.

Voice activation works fine on mine; as far as I'm aware I'm in the UK.

I'll admit that the "do an impression" was entertaining. But I can happily set appointments, figure my way home, enter reminders, etc. without the help of Cortana. Or Siri.

Still having to press the mic button to start her off on my 830. I guess your developer version has voice activation. AFAIK it hasn't been updated generally in the UK to include it.
