You could say the same thing about lazy parents who dump their kids in front of a train set to keep them entertained. At least with a tablet they can do more than watch a train go around in circles all day.

It also has the benefit that you will be teaching your child how to use Windows at the same time as they use the tablet. You can also buy 8 of them for the same price as the iPad.”

For a kid the Linx - or any WIndows tabelt - is a complete and utter waste of time.

Whilst my kids don't mind playing Mahjonng on mine (MS Mahjonng is brilliant, best variant on any platform?) the range of games and apps on Windows is relatively pathetic.

Not a good suggestion, sorry.

Call me an old fart but my son was playing with Thomas the Tank engine at that age.

What's next? A phone for a six year old?”

Blimey, there are some stupidly righteous people on here these days.

My youngest will happily play with cars, hexbugs, a trainset, his tablet, go out to throw a ball, play football, go for a swim, or play with his tablet.

The tablet is just another toy. Not a replacement for all others.

You're angling for a job writing for the Daily Mail, aren't you?

There are hundreds of thousands of games available for the PC. It won't be quick enough to run Crysis but it should cope with most older games plus there are plenty of emulators available under Windows so you also have access to every Sega, Nintendo, Amiga and Mame game ever made. As for applications are you really suggesting that an iPad has a wider range of software than Windows?

No way i'd let my 4 year old use or own a tablet. Ridiculous. Parents seem to use them to shut their kids up as they're too lazy to play with them.

Yes, there are more applications readily available on iOS and Android than on Windows.

The windows app store is relatively sparse. Yes, there are some good games on there, but the comparison to iOS and Android is quite embarrassing.

iOS and Android make it easy. Windows 8.1 tablets are fairly easy to use, but there isn't anything like as many "touch friendly" apps out there - they tend to need a keyboard/mouse/joystick to be usable.

I'm a fan of W8.1 on a tablet, its a cracking environment. But it isn't for everyone - the mass market for gaming on a tablet is iOS and Android. Windows just isn't there.

I'm only 23 but it makes me feel old thinking that when I was 4 we had no computer in the house, let alone an internet connection or wi-fi. I used to read books, watch videos (VHS of course, not Youtube!), ride my trike, play with toys and draw/paint. I think it's OK to let 4-year-olds use tablets as long as they are also playing with real toys and being active.

When I was 4 years old we didn't even have TV .... we used t'dream of having a TV. I was lucky to have a cardboard box. Couldn't afford the pens to draw on it

My 6 year old has had a tablet for a year. My 13 year old has a tablet, laptop, mobile ... but we've just had an afternoon playing twister, after a morning walking out playing with a r/c car. We're knackered, so I have no problems with them sitting down and playing on their tech gadgets for a bit

Nope. The iPhone doesn't have a SIM in it, so it makes a better choice than an iPod Touch where you already have an old iPhone lying around. His iPhone 3GS was retired and he got a 4S instead when he was six.

Just bought him an iPad mini 2 as an upgrade to his iPad 1 for his 7th Birthday present.

Oh he has a Raspberry Pi too

(You'll be complaining next that he has a Sonos Play 3 in his room....)

I think you're confusing "needs" with "wants" - no way does an autistic child "need" an iPhone or tablet.
