Its a particularly innane question. If its something no one knows its either irrelevant, or something you don't tell anyone - let alone 6 million viewers -" I called my doll Saddam, or father is the at large Croydon serial killer ...."

iI comes of interviewers being taught to ask silly questions - because they think they are psychologists, and there's any substance to most of psychology.

Its a suitable case for asking the question back and saying "I don't understand what you mean , can you give me an example - what would you say? " If they say anything you psychoanalyse them, say "me too" , or say "really?" in an incredulous way. If they refuse to say anything you ask why they think they are being so defensive.

Everyone in good reality TV does - its also necessary to rebuild the ruins after depicting someone as a jerk for months. The problem is the journey in the story often went nowhere, and the transformation never really happened.

Very true. By all accounts he has been living it up since the filming of the interviews. Spending money like its water etc, You can take a man out of Essex but you can't take Essex out of the man.

Guaranteed way to lose out: start questioning the interviewer. They won't like it. There's nothing wrong with the question. It's such a common one you should have a prepared answer ready.

It doesn't have to be some dark secret, it's just saying something about the person you are. You could talk about your interests, how you relax, your personal role model, etc.

Bianca floundered on this because she couldn't think of anything to say about herself that wasn't to do with work and career. Even under the stress of an interview you should be able to come up with something non controversial, even if it's just something like your love of animals.

Completely agree. It's a really ORDINARY question, and Bianca couldn't think of anything to say.

As I've said, she could have said 'I love watching cookery programmes', it wasn't bloody hard, but she came out with a really lame answer and then cried.

She should have had something to say to that very ORDINARY question up her sleeve.

Business isn't always only just business. Its about personalities too. Sometimes its an advantage if people get on with the persons they're in business with. Personally I thought she had a better BP of all five and that has won her place but as far as her personality its not really doing her any favors.

And what possible bearing does it have if you say you love slugs, or collect odd socks, or grow petunias?? it might just function as a breaking the ice question if you have tme to waste. Later on, its the sort of question that dumb interviewers ask when they are trying to be clever, and are out of heir depth, or bad psychologists ask to invent a fiction. It invites someone pointing out how dumb the question is, or a pointless answer - that just leads to an even more irrelvant follow up like why do you like listening to I Direction, or why do you like your dog/slug.

And she didn't even ask the irrelevant question - she asked the unanswerable one - tell me something no one else knows. Its the question only someone who doesn't understand the meaning of no one would ask. .Its obviously unanswerable as said , or the answer has to be even more trivial . No one is going to say I really fancy Lord Sugar, and I was thinking of having fish for dinner , gets no one anywhere useful.

Look at it this way - a REAL professional would have had an answer, because it's such a common question. It doesn't mean 'tell me your secrets', or only to amateurs.

Then smile and move on.

The interviewer here was clearly none of those things. All interviewers ask this kind of open question. If you were to do as you suggest, point out how pointless you think the question is, you will be shown the door, quite rightly. Also it wasn't unanswerable. There are plenty of answers you can give about yourself.

The question started out as "tell me something about yourself". It was only when Bianca tried to answer this by paraphrasing her CV that she added "something not on your CV". So Bianca went on about her aspirations and the interviewer said I think people would know that and pressed for something they wouldn't know. THEN Bianca talked about her family, etc. That wasn't challenged but it led on her saying "people don't see the emotional side of me". The interviewer then put the point about Bianca's continual stress on professionalism in her CV and whether it was a mask she hid her emotional side behind.

There was no psychobabble in the questions, she was probing her personality. There's nothing pointless about that from an interviewers perspective. Clearly she struck a nerve because Bianca burst into tears as soon as Ricky began to be critical of her current business.

It's a silly question and comes across as fake. Bianca probably thought it was some sort of trick question. Also if she'd said something like 'I like playing chess', if the interviewer thinks boring people play chess, she will have that subconscious association. You can discover someone's personality through interviewing without having to throw in personal stuff.

I sometimes wonder how many interviews some have actually had.

It was a low blow and unnecessary question. It's her work that should matter and nothing else. I've also find her quite personable when dealing with clients, she's guarded but that shouldn't really come into it when assessing her business acumen which is obviously stella, hence she'll win.

I am glad in a way that she cried. She came across very Terminator like throughout the process. It was like she was thinking I AM GOING TO WIN AND THAT IS ALL.

I hope she wins. She seems like a nice enough lady and her business plan seems credible too especially as there is a need for her product. No doubt tweaks will be made to it but I hope it works out for her in the end.

Its such a standard interview question! I am really worried with the amount of people who think asking "can you tell me a bit about yourself" is such bad practice. Have you never been to an interview before? Please please please google or youtube top 10 questions asked at an interview, everyone who works needs to know this.

It's not a silly question, nor is it fake. I've been asked it at every job interview I've had. They just want to get you talking. I don't think Bianca saw it as a trick question either.

I don't think it was the question, more the suggestion that she had a mask on, suggesting her persona was fake, and as someone said, Mark asking the same thing.

It wasn't so much the question Claudine asked but rather the psychiatric assessment she attempted to give afterwards. She didn't truly know Bianca's character after that short interview and was certainly in no position to imply that she had no personality or that she was hiding behind a mask.
