It's not a silly question, nor is it fake. I've been asked it at every job interview I've had. They just want to get you talking. I don't think Bianca saw it as a trick question either.
The follow up question was tell me something no one knows. Thats a ridiculous question. No one has a clear meaning to anyone who understands the meaning of the word no. If no one knows it, its either because the thing is trivial, a transient thought, or a secret. The trivial answers all look as if you are hiding something. The logical transient thought was what a stupid question- is this an idiot I am being interviewed by? The answer to tell me a secret, is to enquire who the hell they think they are. Bianca's brain goes into shock working on how to deal with such nonsense, and then worries why she's being probed, and tears follow. |

it was pretty pathetic of Bianca to take it so personally. She could have easily turned it around and used it as a positive. "Maybe being professional is just second nature to me, if not first" badaboom you're in the good books.
dont listen to the analyst poster above me, it was an important question. A question Bianca infortunately BSed. I find you can tell a lot about a person by their statements, if they copy a lot then they obviously lack the raw intiative needed as a candidate. The question that lady asked was pretty much about that, instead of just answering it (bloody hell all she would need to say is "I like cats/dogs I guess" and there you go, instead she gave a cliche answer as if she couldnt come up with an independent thought, only relying on tried and tested (BY OTHER PEOPLE, remember how she copied albeit poorly the exclusivity thing?)) statements |

It doesn't have any relation to whether Bianca is capable of running a business and it wasn't asked as an icebreaker, it was done to upset her/provoke her.

Claudine asked Bianca "tell me about yourself"
Bianca started with "i went to sydenham school" Claudine "tell me something no-one else knows about you" Claudine "not on your cv" So I'm thinking okay she wants a secret something not even her friends and family know about Bianca and she wants Bianca to reveal this on national tv infront of 6 million viewers where the secret will not be a secret anymore, first of all the reason why your friends and family don't know this thing about you is its something you are not supposed to bring up in conversation therefore shouldn't be revealed to anyone forever...That's why I wasn't surprised with Bianca's answer. Bianca "my friends and family are really important to me". if you think like the above way, a secret that friends and family don't even now, the f & f are in her mind and answer has to be with f & f in it. Its inane but if you have a secret that you can't express in conversation to even your friends and family, that secret cannot be revealed on national tv. Then conclusion to Bianca's answer by Claudine "you have no personality and you are wearing a mask" that is an insult and doesn't need an answer. Because Bianca showed her personality in the pudding task, the way she was conversing with the tea people, when she pitches to buyers and interested parties on the tasks, the discussions with other contestants in the car, the way she spoke to James in the kitchen to stand up to him when he wanted to bully her. She's shown character. She doesn't have to reveal something so private that no other living person knows about her like how many times she scrubs her body when she goes for her bath. She's shown her personality already without revealing that, if going by hobbies it would be on her cv and what others said about animals, her friends and family would know that because it comes up in conversation with them, so it wouldn't be answering the question either. So this Claudine wanted to know a secret to be revealed on national tv to 6 million people. |

Basically Claudine couldn't fault her so she had to resort to asking her a probing personal question.

Thats not the question that was asked and caused the tears . The first question - What sort of thing interests you can either be an ice breaker, or someone rambling, or its someone, who thinks they understand psychology, probing into sonething they have no competence in. The harmless, icebreaker, version doesn't come late in the interview. Thats the one you might prepare for. This wasn't that. The rambling, time filler, version, comes later, with a friendly tone. This was late , and clearly signalled as a probe with a reason behind it. . That means the defence walls should go up , as , if f you are facing an amateur psychologist, any answer could lead them to any silly assumption. I like my cat, I ride my horse champion daily , I cook in, read a lot, attend UKIP meetings, go out and drink every night, or I belong to Luisa's swingers club, all lead to obvious non sequiters.

i agree. I've seen other comments on this subject which supposedly point to the real purpose of this kind of question, which is to see how assertively you deal with it. It sounds like the latest ludicrous psycho babble HR initiative - destabilise the interviewee and see how they react.
"Tell me about yourself" is pretty standard. "Tell me something nobody else knows" is not, and is nigh on impossible to answer. Whatever answer you give will not lead to anything insightful and so the question is pointless. The irony is that the interviewer was quite obviously wearing two masks herself - the personality mask and the literal mask on her face, given the level of make up. What does that tell us about her? At interviews the question that always threw me was "what are your weaknesses?". How to answer without shooting yourself in the foot? The way I learnt to deal with it was invent some fatuous thing I wanted to improve which wasn't directly connected to the work, but again, it was another pointless exercise. |

In the DS interview with the finalists she said she cried in front of Ricky too on the same issue and he couldn't cope - said something like 'oh blimey they didn't tell me what to do if they cry!' which obviously wasn't shown as he doesn't then look competent.
Without seeing the whole interviews we have no idea whether it's just a very sore point for her (as one example, something may have happened to her in the past that was traumatic) or whether they hounded her all day on it (perhaps briefed to by Sugar to make sure they get the person behind the mask). Impossible to say I reckon with the editing and selection of clips. |

I really do hope that Bianca wins - the comments were out of order and it was imo to fluster her because Claudine couldn't fault her on any thing else.
I suppose its modern interview techniques and they have probably looked at their facebook and twitter feeds but I do think it was a low blow. |

I got the impression that her business plan was so flawless that they were just struggling for anything to criticise her on.

I find Bianca very wooden and wasn't surprised at the question. I felt she was definitely putting on fake tears to try to show she had emotions. Television shows falseness so clearly. Awful tactics to cry at an interview. Pathetic in fact. Who wants to employ someone who is so lacking in poise and control?

^^^ Utter nonsense. It's interesting that some women as well as men are propagating this misogynistic drivel. You only have to read her face, both in the first interview and with Ricky, to see that her emotions were genuine. Besides which, how can you fake cry at the drop of a hat?

Plus, especially when Claudine pushed her to 'tell her something that no one knows, not even friends or family' is a highly personal question. Considering it's hardly a private environment and the answer would likely be televised I don't blame her for shutting down a little. It was a very personal thing to ask and I've had many interviews in my time but never, ever been asked something like that. Likes/dislikes/hobbies, fine, but tell me a secret? What the hell?
Tell me about yourself...? I always have an answer for this lined up. Tell me something about yourself that's not on your CV. I keep fish, so I can go on about that. Tell me something about yourself that friends / famility don't know...? My brother once stayed at my house and accidentally killed one of my favourite fish through over-feeding them. I was very upset but realised that it wasn't intentional and that blaming my brother would not be productive. The interviews happen every year for the past nine years. That some of the Candidates don't prepare for them tells me they aren't that experienced. |

I don't blame Ricky for that reaction. Would anybody cry in a job interview?
I would have expected anyone in his line of business (or most people in fact) to deal with the situation, however unexpected, by getting her some tissues, gently telling her to take a few minutes, and probably ask her if she wanted to step outside for a bit. |

That some of the Candidates don't prepare for them tells me they aren't that experienced. Link:http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...-12-interviews Secret is what she is asking, not told to another person before that day, Claudine is asking her to reveal that infront of her and 6 million viewers. The reason why something is kept to yourself may mean its not something you bring up in conversation if you are a normal person. Thats why what you are thinking is not what is being asked here Joel, you can watch it again, the bold parts i've highlighted here is what Claudine asked Bianca. Bianca knows she's asking her something no-one else knows not even friends and family having f&f in her mind she says in her answer friends and family are very important to me, leaving to Claudine to conclude Bianca doesn't tell her f&f this on a regular basis. But Claudine insulted her after hearing this to say "you come across with no personality and you are wearing a mask" This I felt crossed the line just because Bianca didn't reveal a secret to nosey Claudine she retaliated by insulting her for being reserved and professional. Bianca after being told she's too professional and is acting thats not the real her, went to tell the other candidates and Mark said to Bianca "are you hiding behind a mask?" Bianca said "No this is how I am, i'm professional like this all the time, but Mark told her further that she comes across robotic and that Claudine got into her head, this what Mark said was now what really did get into her head and affected her interview with Ricky when he asked her why she's charging 100 fees to people that need help with branding themselves and she cried but came back to say "This business will work and I really believe in it and I just want a chance to prove it". I felt after 1 hour each interview with Claude, Mark and Claudine she was done with discussing her as a person, and just wanted to talk about the business she is bringing to the table, after 3 hours don't you believe me by now, what I am saying to you? |

Karen stuck up for Bianca on You're Hired. She said something like "don't ever be ashamed of being professional" and basically complimented her on her manner. I totally agree with Karen and think Claudine was totally out of order.

The narrator said the female one was their to judge the person themselves. I do agree she went a bit extreme
"Tell me something about YOU" Bianca: blah blah, cliche cliche, tested quotes from the industry, not my own thoughts, blah blah It was a test to see whether she could make an independent thought or if she only sprouted nonsense that had already been tried and tested by others, Bianca failed. |

It was quite interesting how she responded to the mask comment which felt a bit odd making assessments like that when she (interviewer) had only spoken to her for a matter of minutes.
I can see why it put Bianca off a bit ,like it felt unexpected. What I don't understand is the bit where she was asked 'tell me something about you that's not on the cv' and she couldn't find a good answer. Why not just trot out some trivial answer like 'I like to bake cakes in my spare time' or something, no ones gonna come to her house and check lol. Surely its better than umming and aahing and not saying anything. |

I wonder what the response should have been .
It wasn't only a question of tell me something not on your CV but tell me something no one else knows . They aren't best friends after all. What could the answer have been ? The unfortunate thing was ut unsettled her for the next interview which was brought up in the boardroom unlike the question itself. I think anyway the fact that the man from Google said he would employ mark if lord sugar didn't sealed the deal. |
