Mind you, the way we celebrate Christmas now is different. Idents last for three weeks and not three days, people are off work for the duration and not just three days and it seems to be a more illustrious affair than twenty years ago. I doubt they would have a 16th - 29th issue again.”

I can sort of understand a 16-29th issue in 1972 as New Year's Day didn't become a Bank Holiday until 1974 in England.

Can't understand why they did one in 1995 though!

Its surprising that New Years Day has only been a bank holiday for a relatively short time. I wonder what the schedules were like pre-bank holiday.

Yes, I've got I think the 1974 Christmas RT (or would it be the 1973) where I think they mention this in the "editorial"...

Are we allowed to mention the TVTimes in this thread (sorry to blaspheme)? Anybody remember how for a while in the '70s their double issue would have a "second cover" halfway through the magazine? Whether you were supposed to detach it into two halves, so it fell apart, is unclear!

If there ever was a 16/29 double issue now, it could kinda be a normal edition, but just with Christmas Added.

These days the first week, would just be normal schedules, you would probably get This Morning up until the 23rd. Loose Women, would be something like Let's do Christmas.

The rest of the channels would be normal.

I know folks like to do Fantasy Schedules in here, do you think Sosps will be shown on Boxing Day or the Sunday, Eastenders I'm guessing will have a Boxing Day ep, Prtsonally would be surprised if ITV don't show at least one ep of Corrie and Emmerdale on those days, especially as ITV won't have any of there normal weekend Fayre to show.

Wizzywick thanks for the quiz sorry for your loss.

Learnt something never new NYD wasn't always a bank holiday.

I guess people back then didn't get drunk at new year

Looking at that schedule, looks weird to not see any news until 5.45..

During the quiz, I was amazed one year BBC put Neighbours on Christmss Day, guess that was its height

Just for interest, here in Scotland January the 1st and 2nd are bank holidays. Christmas Day didn't become a public holiday until 1958 and Boxing Day until 1974. The new year, Hogmany, was always the bigger festive holiday. In the early 70's I remember my dad heading off to work, as usual, on Boxing Day. I, personally, have always far preferred Christmas to Hogmany..

It seems that Scottish football still played a full fixture card on Christmas day as late as 1976, although from what I read, weather meant not many games went ahead! It seems in England that the final full Christmas Day fixture list was in 1958/59.

Also dont forget that until 1991 there was only the Radio Times for the BBC and TV Times for ITV and Channel 4 so you had to buy both and there were no weekly tv supplements in the papers

I remember having to do that.

1976 must have been fun as the Radio Times double issue covered

18 Dec 1976 to 1 Jan 1977 (15 Day Issue)

but TV Times (15 day Issue) covered

24 Dec 1976 to 7 Jan 1977!

In 1982, the Christmas issue started on Friday 24th December - but also had the Christmas Eve listings in the previous weeks issue too, but I don't think there were any page decorations in the previous issue. It was an odd one that 1982 issue, but it was also the longest Christmas holiday the UK had ever had since all nations had now adopted the bank holidays for all days over the festive period. Friday was Xmas Eve, then Saturday was Xmas Day, Sunday was Christmas Sunday, Monday was Boxing Day, then it was Holiday Tuesday and that lead to New Year's Eve and New Years Day on the Saturday with an additional holiday for all on the Monday 3rd. That had never happened before so I guess that's why they brought the 1982 issue out in the way they did. The only other time the RT started on Xmas Eve was in 1977.

So that scuppers my self created myth that the RT and TVTimes always worked in conjunction with each other!

This is all very interesting. Sorry I jumped the gun and started talking about next year before we have even had this year. However I'm sure this subject will come up again after this year is all done and dusted.

So back to this year Christmas 2015 countdown.

Ah, the lesser spotted Christmas Sunday, when Christmas Day is a Saturday... Although strangely I don't think they've had that the last couple of times it's happened, I think Sunday 26th has been boringly called Boxing Day - why, I don't quite know

Now, I consider myself something of RT/TVT anorak but had no idea about that at all... That even got beyond Twelfth Night! You can't take your decorations down and still have the double RT kicking about... Suppose you'd need to have detached the two "halves" as I outlined earlier

The last time we had Christmas Sunday was in 1993. I asked the RT in 1999 why that years issue had Sunday 26th as Boxing Day and was told it was a consensus agreement across the board that due to Sunday trading laws and sporting fixtures and the fact a modern public would no longer understand why Boxing Day didn't follow Christmas Day, from hereon in Boxing Day will always be the day after Christmas regardless as to which day it fell upon.

I suppose "Sale starts Christmas Sunday" doesn't quite have the same ring to it!

Personally I can't imagine anything worse than going shopping on Boxing Day!

I cringe every Boxing Day when I see on the News the hordes of shoppers crowding into shops to grab a faux bargain. Why don't they get a life? My mum said that a bargain is only a bargain if it is something cheap that you genuinely need. Otherwise its just a waste of money. I think I took those words on board as I hate shopping in general and would NEVER go out shopping on Boxing Day.

think the Saturday is regarded as Boxing Day now.

i know Football is being classed as Boxing Day on the Saturday.

On Boxing Day, be interesting to see hoe BBC1 fit in Match of the Day, as for the first time I can remember there is a 7.45pm fixture.

Maybe the could fit in a film, and show the Football past 11.

be interesting if Channel 5 do there normal Themed evenings on Boxing Day or stick Football League Tonight at 9pm

No doubt we've got the horrible spectacle of those appalling chavs on "Black Friday" to look forward to again this year...

MOTD could probably go 10.50 but no later. PL, in terms of tv, is classing it as a normal Sat despite the 7.45.
