This is my final post in this thread.
Now that Christmas Day has arrived here in the UK I would like to say posting in and reading this thread has been very enjoyable. In particular I would like to thank Claire's Dad for running the guess the cover contest and I would like to thank wizzywick for running the quiz. I hope that my fellow posters have a merry Christmas and a happy new year. I hope that you enjoy this festive tune from WHAM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aznAq5a5aP4 |

Right the results of the ratings game
Downton Abbey 6.58 Strictly Come Dancing 6.49 Mrs Brown's Boys 6.41 Stick Man 6.36 Call The Midwife 5.80 Dr Who 5.77 After working it out we had a tie between Cully83 and Tanni both on 29 out of 42 After the first tie break (who had a viewing figure nearly exact it ended up level again) After the second tie break (who had the most number of correct positions it ended up in a tie again) SO the third tie breaker was who was closest to the winning programme in terms of viewers and that finally gave us a winner so congratulations goes to .... (drum roll, waits 30 seconds) CULLY 83 2nd place - Tanni 29pts 3 Marke09 22pts 4 Claires Dad 20pts 5 Aarron Cardwell 19pts |

I've really enjoyed this year's Christmas Radio Times (I only buy it once a year now). For around the price of a pint in these parts (£4.50 for a pint of Camden Ink last week!) it kept me entertained for a couple of hours.

Did anybody notice the typo in the Shaun The Sheep article on page 41? In the subheading the time is given as 000pm, I wonder if they do multiple print runs (like newspapers have late editions); was anybody else's copy correct?

I really liked the comments by David Attenborough in his answer to the last question (on page 24) about waking up early on Christmas morning when it seems the rest of the world is asleep. I've got my own memories along similar lines. Very magical.

Martin Freeman’s interview surprised me. I don't know why but I hadn't imagined him to be so hard-boiled. Anyway, here we are on the final day covered by Christmas double issue and Sherlock is the last of my highlighted shows.
I've just done a quick tally of what I'd highlighted: 43 shows highlighted 16 watched/listened to 1 still to be broadcast 26 sitting on the TiVo box waiting to be enjoyed 43 shows highlighted 4 Radio programmes 2 Radio 4 2 Radio 2 39 Television programmes 26 BBC 13 Commercial BBC programmes 11 BBC1 7 BBC2 6 BBC4 1 CBBC 1 cbeebies Commercial 1 ITV 1 ITV2 3 Channel 5 4 Channel 4 1 e4 2 Film4 1 Sky1 I'd just like to thank everyone who was contributed to this discussion over the last year, you're all superstars. Once Twelfth Night is over, I'll pop into the 2016 discussion and see what you've all been up to. |

My final post on the 2015 thread. Just some thoughts on the Radio Times, and the telly offerings over the festive period. There is still one final biggie to come though, Sherlock, tonight.
As regards the Radio Times, the Christmas edition is the only copy I buy in a year. And it is probably more tradition that I buy it, rather than as a guide to what is on the tv. I read it when I get it, mentally register some programmes that I might enjoy and then shut it over, and probably, don't use it again. Tonight it will go upstairs, join the previous 12 Christmas copies I have collected in the past 12 years, and stay on a shelf on the bedside book cabinet. My daughters don't, and never have, devoured the Radio Times as I did when I was younger. Of course, then, there were two magazines you had to buy, the Radio and TV Times. But I would read and read both of them in the run up to Christmas, learning almost the entire 3, eventually 4, channels schedules. To such an extent that when a neighbour popped in for a chat one day (neighbours don't seem to pop in for chats any more!) that my mum asked her to pick any channel, any day and any time and I would know what was on. I did, my mum was fair proud of me . It was the Beachgrove Gardens review of the year for anyone interested. This must have been about 35 years ago now, I still can remember. But then the Radio and TV Times Christmas editions were an important part of the year for me. So, I'll next buy a Radio Times for Christmas 2016. More about that on the 2016 thread. As for the tv, well in my last post of the 2014 thread I suggested that I watched less tv then than I had ever done. I think I beat that this year. Trying to think back at what I watched, and enjoyed, it was very little. The Golden Age of Childrens TV the Monday before Christmas, MasterChef the Professionals and Peter Kay on Christmas Eve were good. And Then There Were None was ok, but would have been better with a one off 2 hours, rather than dragged out over three nights imo, and I did record The China Syndrome late one night, which is a great film. I'll watch Sherlock tonight, more in hope than anything. Other than that, I can't think off the top of my head what else stands out from the TV over this past two weeks. I really hope that BBC1 decide to change their Christmas night line up in 2016. Anyway, I my mind, the Christmas Radio Times threads are the friendliest, most welcoming threads anywhere on Digital Spy, and one I always hope someone has added to. And that is down to all those that contribute throughout the year. So a big thank you to you all, whether it is organising one of the competitions that runs throughout the year, guessing the tv schedule, or just posting your thoughts. I'll see you again on the 2016 thread, but I hope you all have a great 2016. |

I'll see you again on the 2016 thread, but I hope you all have a great 2016. My kids don't really get why I bother buying the Radio Times at Christmas, other than for tradition. Mind you, they don't watch as much 'broadcast' tv as I did at their age because they're so into Youtube. For me (& my wife to a far lesser extent) Christmas wouldn't be the same without it, even though it's use is now more ornamental than practical. Christmas TV was a bit more disappointing this year but I've no complaints really. Sherlock was great, Peter Kay, xmas you've been framed, the John Lewis Xmas documentary, the children's tv thing on BBC4, Charlie Brooker & plus lots of stuff we always watch at Christmas (Polar Express, Scrooge, Charlie & Lola, Charlie Brown Xmas etc.) I've been reading the thread since 2005 when I was looking for early news of Christmas TV. Maybe it's a generational thing, but that thrilled anticipation of Christmas TV as a child lives on through these posts. Thank you again Pedrok and thanks everyone who contributes. |
