Thoughts on the showdances

1. Mark: All of the elements fitted into the overall theme.

But he lacks the technique to really shine, and the bit up and down the stairs came across as covering up for a limited repertoire. And there were no Wow-factor lifts.

2. Simon: Better technique for me. But the overall theme was marred by the insertion of the Ballroom sequence.

That could only have worked well at the start, when their clothes were more appropriate. The lifts were better, but again lacked the Wow-factor to pull in the votes.

3. Frankie: She doesn't have the combination of personality and technique to really shine in a routine primarily out of hold, especially when it comes to using upper-body and arms.

When a celeb has those limitations a Latin-based routine primarily in hold is a really bad idea, as we saw in last year's Final. Which leaves Ballroom.

But Wow-factor lifts are absolutely essential for a Ballroom-based Showdance, and Frankie doesn't have the technique for lifts. The bench sequence was a substitute for lifts, but didn't fit with the overall theme. And yet again failed to Wow.

4. Caroline: "Forget showdance Pash, how can we blow their minds?"

Was that a "J lift" early on? She leaped on him like some sort of ugly growth, the Pro in Week 1 carrying all the weight of a needy, useless celeb - morphing seamlessly in a couple of seconds into a Week 13 Wow-factor lift.

And the audible gasp from the audience that greeted the centrepiece lift says it all.

What does Greg say to Steve just after the routine finishes? "Incredible"?

Loved Carolines and Frankies think less use of benches wou ld have helped Frankie more. My all time favourite though is Tom and Camillas

Frankie and Kevin's was the best for me. I love those classic routines that look like they've come straight out of a golden era hollywood musical. I also love showdances that look like... actual dancing. Rather than a succession of lifts tied together with awkward dance moves.

I did have a little cry at Caroline's one, knowing what she's gone through and what dancing means to her. She is a worthy winner but tbh they all are.

I thought they were all fairly poor. Caroline's was the best of the bunch but I didn't like it much.

Frankie's was pedestrian and would have been fine in week 3, but as a showdance it was limp, wooden and underwhelming.

Simon's should really have been AS and AT based, wasn't convinced by the frenetic mash up.

I'm surprised to say this as I never particularly took to James, but DVO and his showdance has been the SCD best ever, no-one has yet matched it.

Can't bear the liftathon-style of dance with mega-emoting so hated Caroline's dance.

Simon's was a dog's breakfast stylistically.

Frankie's was disappointing. The benches were too high. I wanted to see some jumping off and on. Something a bit risky. It was far too static.

Tom and Camilla for me.

I guess if you are wearing heels, its difficult to jump on and off a bench without thinking 'OMG I'm going to break an ankle'.

I'm sure I've seen something very similar to Caroline's before but can't put my finger on it.

I found Simon's distracting with all the bright lights and really unfortunate that he got that song.

Loved Frankie's but also didn't like the bench hopping.

Caroline was always going to be onto a winner with 'Angels', so many people love that song.

Frankie's song was definitely well suited to a showdance

Simon's Elvis was oh so wrong!!!

What does it say? That the audience thought it must have knocked the breath out of Pasha?

I didn't find it a "wow" dance, let alone "mind-blowing".

I'm just watching now.

Loved Frankie's but agree the bench bit kind of stilted it and would have preferred it without.

Frankie looked stunning - just like Audrey Hepburn.

Mark lip syncing eek! Deffo an aerobics feel to it with the lap of the stairs (essentially a waste of 4 bars) liked the lift at the end though.

Caroline, just gorge, brought me to years, you could tell she was completely in the moment.

Simon was good. Loved the three boxes and it worked in a way Frankie's benches didn't. Wasn't wowed by it but definitely very good.

Oddly enough it appears James would beg to differ. Just caught up with his running commentary from yesterday, and he said Caroline's Showdance was the best ever on Strictly - even better than his.

I enjoyed them all, but Caroline and pasha, Frankie and Kevin, and Simon and Kristina were definitely in a different league to Mark, who did his best but couldn't match them.

Frankie - in agreement with most. Loved it until the silly bench bit

Mark - refuse to comment on that crap

Caroline - danced well just really not to my taste

Simon - loved it. But did feel a little déjà vu with kristina taking layers off as she did in Jason's Showdance.

To me Caroline and Pasha's freestyle changed my opinion on contemporary. I HATED contemporary due to the fact that DWTS have so many of them and the lifts are UGLY but Caroline's were absolutely beautiful no sickled feet all smooth
My fave all time Free with Alesha's

Bit late to the party.

Frankie - thought it was great until they started messing about on those benches - couldn't quite see the reason for those. For me, it would have been better with them taken out and adding more of the general 'proper' dancing.

Mark - bit of a mess, but suited him and his personality - better for Karen to give him something like that which he would enjoy than for her to choreograph something too technically difficult for him

Caroline - very different and brave, but ulitmately she pulled it off brilliantly, slightly disappointing for me in that I'd have liked to see some element of either Ballroom or Latin in it somewhere but a real showstopper of a routine

Simon - Kristina pretty much threw everything but the Kitchen sink at it - showed good elements of both Ballroom and Latin and everything he's learned but felt just a bit frantic

Franke & Kevin's show dance was lovely but lacked flow. More like an American Smooth with extras. Beautiful dance but not quite F&G as lacked that extra spark. Trying to combine a dance from Top Hat with one from Sound of Music did not quite come off.

Mark & Karen - frantic running around dressed as a 20/20 cricketer chasing a sparkly green thing.

Caroline & Pasha's - interpreted the music & words in a highly personal way to Caroline with Pasha providing the lifts. Exquisite.

Simon & Kristina's montage was great but not my cup of tea. Prefer a single theme rather than separates joined together.

Frankie and Kevin, sweet but lacking sparkle
Mark and Karen enthusiam over content
Caroline very emotional and still accomplished, possibly the first contemporary dance I enjoyed watching
Simon and Kristina, quirky but not quite polished

The show dances reflected well the contestants' abilities.

Can I be controversial and say that I didn't think it was contemporary dance

Frankies was lovely until the bench bit.
Marks was good fun until the running up the stairs bit.
I hated Carolines, too much wafting about and lifts. Reminded me of Louis Smiths showdance which I also hated.
Simons was the best, fun and played to his strengths.

I’m overall underwhelmed by most showdances though, they all try too hard and over do it.
Nothing has ever topped Tom Chambers showdance.

Yes and i despised Louis' showdance.

Mark: OK but nothing special. If you are going to use the stairs, do something worthwhile with them.

Frankie: The bench bit fell a bit flat. My other half wondered if there had been something else planned with them that either got missed on the night or scrapped in development.

Caroline: The spirit of Artem inhabited this too much for my taste. Loads of wafting and her feet weren't on the floor enough.

Simon: I loved the routine, even if it was a little untidy in places. I really hope he continues to dance and makes some career with it.
