I did read that and I intensely dislike the number of animals that are being put down, often perfectly healthy.

Something needs to be done about it-probably more responsible dog ownership-there are a lot of dogs that escape from gardens or who are simply dumped when people get fed up with them and left to roam then get picked up by dog wardens etc.

There needs to be more responsible dog ownership but also more no kill animal shelters. The Government should provide money for this as it is an animal welfare issue alongside shelters raising funds through fundraising.

I think the dog in this situation should at least be given a chance of finding a home- if need be if unwell and dying should make it clear want dog to go to a no kill shelter or ask a family member or friend if they can take on.

Government doesn't have any money only what we give them, and much as I love dogs I can't imagine prioritising animals over children and elderly people would exactly be popular.

This is an older dog too so wouldn't be easy to home, I think the lady has thought long and hard about what to do about her responsibility for her animal and if she thinks this best then I won't say she is wrong.

It's looking at what money is wasted-a lot of money is wasted by councils and assemblies on building stupid statues and so forth so instead of putting money in to silly things-they look at money wasted and squandered and instead say this is a waste of money we'll put towards something worthwhile instead-that way children and elderly still get but money that would have gone on silly things-and much public money is squandered! would go to a good worthwhile cause instead.

I completely disagree with what the woman insisted on- it is not her place to decide because it's her end her dog must die too when he/ she has the chance of a new loving home and the dog is healthy.

So you disagree that the woman wished for her dog to be sent to a non kill shelter but there weren't the funds so she would rather do the decent thing and have him pts properly and be buried with her...rather than die in fear fitting and pissing itself being killed in a shelter. Oh wait you only read the bit you wanted to so you can be indignant about her choice.

She was clearly a dedicated pet owner, considered her options and took responsibility, good on her I say a proper pet owner.

According to the link the dog has a history of aggression and could be a risk to both adults or children. - which at the least might have made rehoming difficult. She probably thought she was doing her best by the dog. It made me think though. My beloved 14 year old collie costs a fortune in vets bills due to her health condition. Who would take her on? That said I believe the RSPCA (and maybe others) has a scheme where you can make arrangements for your pet should you die. I suppose if one left them a bequest too, cost shouldn't be an issue.

The RSPCA would put it down in a heart beat bequest or no, they do not have the space to keep dogs they cant rehome quickly.

Indeed and I just read they specifically exclude aggressive dogs from their scheme.

I've looked into schemes where we could leave our dogs with money to keep them, none seem to offer an individual any guarantee they will either use the bequest for your own dog or keep your own dog alive.

I have been advised find an individual who I trust and leave the dogs and money to them is best way to guarantee your dog gets the care you wish.

As I said in previous post she could have asked family or friends and if they couldn't take on she could have arranged before she died-assuming she had medical condition for the dog to go to another home, if she was unfit to do this she could have requested family do this for her thus the dog would have been found a home already.

There are plenty of animal lovers out there and I suspect the dog will soon find a home.

you are extremely unrealistic and certainly naïve about dog rescue in general. I am sure she had discussed it wither her family / friends as they were the ones going to be taking it to the vet to be PTS...do you honestly think if they were willing to home it that would be the case, she has a 9 year old large breed dog with aggression issues, the non kill shelter was not an option and in the US they have 3 days not 7 days like here so it would be KILLED no ifs no buts it was not an easy to home dog especially considering it probably only had a year or so left to live anyhow

There are a million things needed more in this country and if you knew anything about pet ownership and rescue you would know that it is the breeding of animals that needs to be tackled not the rescue end

I wouldn't have asked anyone to take on my human aggressive dogs, they were safe with me as this dog was with her, you can't simply send them to another family to bite and possibly kill people ! how irresponsible would that be and is part of the problem we have with dangerous dogs in this country - if people when they know a dog bites actually took responsibility and had them PTS rather than rehome them we would have far few of the awful cases we have been seeing.

You gave stats of 4-5 million dogs being put to sleep in America each year, over 100,000 dogs in UK.

I regard humans and animals as being equal, therefore tackling this problem would be one of the main issues for me.

Such large numbers of dogs being put down is tragic and the US and UK and countries throughout the world should make it a priority to deal with.

As I said in post many dogs find themselves strays, being picked up by dog wardens-people ensure their pets don't go missing that would be a start, people realising a dog is for life and not just Christmas would be another one, and as I said more Government support put in to it not silly things and introduce legislation so all animal shelters are no kill shelters and thus no more people find themselves in situation like this as there will be a no kill shelter readily available.

As for breeding of animals people should ensure they are neutered.

I guess it would depend on the brutality of the attack on dog being put to sleep but I would quite like centres for aggressive dogs where they can be fed, watered, have a roof over head and are not a risk to anyone.

Never happen, we can't afford to give appropriate care to people, housing feeding and vet costs for at least 100,000 dogs for x amount of years. I'm a dog lover but even I think that would be a ridiculous waste of funds for a country.

Maybe tax people and put it towards dog shelters.

I'd be happy to give 5 pound a month towards it and if everyone's tax went to it, that would make a difference.

A neighbour used to have a dog which would bite you if you as much as touched it. She constantly had to warn people. Personally I think it should have been muzzled when out. If anything had happened to the neighbour, I certainly wouldn't have taken it in. In the real world one can't expect funding for centres to house such dogs when there aren't even the resources to keep good family pets.

I would do the same tbh, unless a family member could take Diz until a forever home was found.
She isn't the easiest dog (or breed) to rehome and I think kenelling would break her.

Gently passing away whilst you are healthy and loved, is IMO, a far kinder option than letting a difficult dog take their chances in the shelter system... some rescue dog can linger in no kill shelter for years and with the best care in the world, it is lonely and stressful.

Now that's cruelty, consigning a dog to a centre (cage) where it can be fed and watered and no quality of life at all.

You are living in some sort of odd world there, our taxes are not targeted like that and never will be we are drowning in debt trying to look after humans without adding animals into the situation too.

Yeah right. As a childless person I resent part of my taxes going to raising other folks children but I can understand and accept it. Good luck with selling that idea to those who actually don't like dogs or to people whose parents can't get adequate care or to patients who are not being given life extending drugs because of the cost.
