That's not good. Are you using a genuine Apple charger?
Is the phone still under warranty?

Do you have a micro sd card in it? My samsung overheated because of a dodgy micro sd card.

iPhones don't have SD cards.

Does Apple have a flashlight app? I left mine on with a Samsung S4 mini once and it got very hot.

I take it the screen wasn't on during charging? That can make phones get hot

The only time I have ever known my iPhone to get warm (not hot) was during charging or using the camera for video.

I would advise the OP to take it into an Apple store to be looked over, its highly unusual for iPhones to get hot to the degree mention. Failing that speak to them over the phone. Apple in fairness to them are one of the few companies that actually do give a shit about its devices and customers. Being out of warranty is less of a problem for them when faults like this occur.

To the point however, get yourself an appointment via the link mentioned earlier and get it checked out, worst they can say is no fault found or best is replace the entire unit with a new one.

Is it OK now?

There is a possibility that peak detect did not happen so check for any sign of a 'ticking time bomb' bulge that says change the battery.

Could be dirt inside the Lightning port.

Take it to Apple and explain what happened, not normal at all.

Me and the wife have had iphone 5S for around a year and they've never got hot like that, a little warm if charging but not hot.
