One of the best I read. I actually didn't come across this until it was one of our work projects. I never enjoyed reading as much as I did at that time.

It's a fairly decent character-driven suspense-mystery thriller that explores moral dilemmas and consequences during a years-long game of cat and mouse between a gifted neurosurgeon and his young ex-patient, who holds the key to a trail of murders across Europe.

Slow start, but you won't realise until too late that the slow start was when the story sank its claws in you without you noticing, and won't let go until the end. It does weaken a little towards the end, but by then, you won't mind because after so much darkness and many characters, you're ready for the end, which arrives two volumes later.

Why don't you borrow the first two volumes from your local library to see if you like it? It's 18 volumes long. Quite a commitment if you want to buy.

Mind you, there's a reissue in form of omnibus editions of the series last summer. Monster: the Perfect Edition by the same publisher, Viz Media. Each edition contains two volumes, which makes it approx. 420 pages per edition. This suggests the reissued series will be around 9 volumes in total. Still a good idea to borrow the first volume from your local library, though.

Have had this recommended to me by loads of people... sadly it'll have to wait until I finally manage to get all of his 20th Century Boys!

Excellent summary thanks.

Is the Perfect Edition edited or is it the full version?

Seeing that both are translated, both are indeed edited.

But yes, both are the full version. The difference is that both have different translators. Well, the Perfect Edition has a mixture of old and new translations. I didn't compare them with each other or with the original, so I don't know which is better.

I've seen the anime of it, it's very slow and at times which I assume the manga is like too. Personally I wouldn't buy it, but I'm more into things like Death Note and Liar Game (which seriously needs to be made into an anime asap).
