You're a sneaky devil, I voted no on the poll thinking it was the question of if I would stop watching if the Doctor became female not would I still watch

I, too, voted incorrectly because I assumed the thread title was also the poll question.

Judging by the number of posters this has happened to, perhaps all "no" votes should count as "yes", and vice versa!
That would void my vote because I saw the first few posts before voting and answered the poll question.

"Would you stop watching if the Doctor became female?"

In the future, if that happened, yes. However, that would not stop me watching repeats of previous regenerations of the Doctor.

It's one thing for the Master to have a sex change, but it's another thing for the Doctor to cross that line.

This thread is not about discussing whether or not it should happen. That has been discussed to death on DS. I want to focus on whether people who hate the idea would stop watching if it did happen.

I'm not going to vote in the poll, but if I did, I would choose Yes. The change would be too much for me.

The Doctor is not human, but he is essentially male. Gender is not like skin colour. Gender is fundamental to personal identity, while skin colour is just a surface trait.

Would you still watch DW if the Doctor became female?

Please redo this;
I voted incorrectly - my vote contradicts my posting.

Thanks. Sorry for the confusion
No problem. Anyone can make a mistake.

It's been several hours and all I've had is the automated response from the mods in my email. The poll hasn't been reset or changed. I wonder if the request needs to come from the originator? Worth asking them yourself?

Ugh, only read the thread title, so voted incorrectly.
Same. Needs redoing if you want a truer reflection

I'm a bit confused as to why people feel that a female doctor would be so unrealistic on a show where a 900 year old man, that has a complete personality and face change every few years flies around space and time in a police box fighting aliens and monsters?

For me, it's nothing to do with being 'unrealistic'. It's the fact that for 51 of our years, thousands of his, he has been male. In all the books, the TV shows, the films, the comics, the magazines, the fan-fics (well...): male. The character is well-established as a man. That's all. Maybe in 200 years time, society won't give a fig about gender, but for now, it's important to us.

Can you imagine if one of your parents announced they were swapping gender? You'd almost certainly still love them, but, my god, you'd feel... odd. Well, THAT for the Doctor becoming a woman.

I feel that if they ever make the Doctor female, they should treat it as though the Doctor has always changed gender and that we have only seen the male forms previously. I know this might mean playing with the time line a little, such as having a 3rd or 5th female Doctor instead of the male 3rd and 5th Doctors.

Also if they do ever do it, I hope they just make the Doctor female and don't make an issue of it, such as just happening to go to a planet when women are treated badly and we have women's issues forced on us just because the Doctor is female.

It's not unrealistic to imagine that in the millions of years the Doctor could exist, we could have only seen the Male Doctors for the fraction of time we have seen the Doctor.

I agree. But we've only ever seen, or heard of, him as a humaniform male, of roughly the same size / shape / ethnicity. He could've been a lizard, a gas, or a seven-dimensional pomegranate with a bad attitude. But he's never mentioned it.

The mere fact alone of The Doctor becoming female wouldn't stop me watching. That would be stupid.

When the 9th doctor was about to regenerate into the 10th doctor he did say 'I might have two heads, or no head' so it's certainly established that it's possible for him to look less human.

As for the main subject of the thread, I think there should be a 'maybe' option, as for me, I almost certainly think a female doctor would be a turn off and don't want it to happen, but if it did I'd have to give it at least one episode before I decided if the female doctor was really as bad as I imagine it would be. After all, Missy turned out rather well, but at the same time it's a completely different scenario when making such a big change to the character the whole show revolves around.

What are you going on about? Clearly you have never heard about online news show with about only 2 billion views on youtube!

I have seen the YouTube channel. I'm surprised you haven't seen all the comments asking why a channel with a supposed 'liberal' agenda is named after a racist group of Fascists who carried out the first genocide of the 20th century and inspired Hitler's holocaust.

I voted YES (in the corrected version!).

I could not possibly accept my Doctor of 50 + years as being a woman!!
OK - The Master has got away with it! I love Missy.......but hey, we're talking about the STAR of the show!! Missy is just a counterpart villain - probably appear in a story or so in the future, who nose (). ?
The Doctor is MALE, end of!!

The poll question has been corrected
That's absolutely pointless unless the results are reset.
My answer is now saying the opposite of what I intended, and I can't of course vote again!

What's the worry??
The results are almost 50/50 !
It's almost equal - I still vote NO for a female doctor. Is that clear??
Or shall I vote YES I disagree that the Doctor should be female??
Does that complicate matters?

It doesn't matter if the votes in total are 50/50 or any other ratio. Many people will have voted incorrectly, and some correctly and that ratio is unknown. Therefore this poll is still meaningless.

It's null and void without a complete reset so that those who voted the opposite of what they intended can correct their vote. Those who dodged the error would also vote again.

And, just to add further confusion , I think the question as framed now is biased. It should say "Would you continue watching Doctor Who if the Doctor became female?" I'm no polling expert but I think the current version invites the reader to consider the change and would probably result in a slight bias towards saying "I'd stop watching". The options should not include yes or no. They should be "continue watching" and "stop watching".

For me the doctor becoming female is no different than being played by a different, male, actor.

Of course I'd watch. I'd probably be a little skeptical tbh but I'd still give it a go, And either continue to watch because the show was good or stop watching because the show was bad. The gender of the Doctor is irrelevant.

Unless of course they chose a female actor I can't stand. But even then I'd probably give it a shot. I couldn't abide by Billie Piper until Doctor Who, same with Catherine Tate and they are both now my favourite who companions of all (Catherine first). So I now watch other shows they're in based on Doctor Who making me a fan.

I honestly can't think of a single casting based reason that would make me not so much as give it a chance.

I'm a voter for NO to a female Doctor - but to be honest if that POLL was made to be:-

YES
NO
MAYBE: That would get a better vote!!
