I think overall, 2014 was a disappointing year phone-wise.
iPhone users had a major year as the larger screen size gave them a big bump up in user experience.

Otherwise it all seemed so very iterative, compared to the year before.

I'd say 2012 was a much bigger year. Phones like the iPhone 5, Lumia 920, Lumia 1020, Galaxy S3, HTC One M7 were all a lot more market changing.

This was a big year for iPhone in terms of hardware, a big year for Android in terms of software - material design and a mixed year for windows phone (windows 8.1 was a massive software update on the phone but no major hardware this year).

I think it's been a bigger year for tablets - iPad plateauing with no major improvements, improvements in quality of Android tablets, Windows 8.1 spreading down to £99 tablets. This christmas thanks to the Linx brand, windows tablets have come out of nowhere to be everywhere.

Has to be the Motorola G in all its variants.

BTW, mine it the OnePlus One.

Works great on Three. No problems with the phone. Not needed CS.

The subject is subjective.”

Exactly all this.

Note4 for me then.

I would argue it has a strong case, objectively-speaking, as well.
Best screen on any phone, an improved version of the S5's camera (which had been well received), nicer aesthetics/choice of materials than previous models and the S-Pen keeps getting more useful.

iPhone 6!

Yes people would moan about the price of the Apple phone but it's a premium product unlike say a Samsung phone which is old straight after you buy it because by the end of the month they'll have newer model out.

Yes, exactly. I bought recently, a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. An excellent phone but got 'stuff' I'll never use so could have really bought one of the many budget phones such as the HTC Desire 510 or Moto X and wouldn't really have noticed any real difference.
Ultimately they all send texts and make phone calls and take decent enough photos, although mine is supposed to be better in that respect with a 20 megapixel camera.

In the budget sector is has to be Motorola's Moto G but as for the higher end models it's hard to say with so much choice

Sorry but I meant the Moto G. Keep on getting X and G wrong. Yes my friend and his wife both have the Moto G phones.
The battery life on my Xperia is fantastische, in the manner I use it. About 6 days between charges. Turned off overnight of course.

I would like to add to the G Note 4, for many years I have slagged off Samsung with the cheap feeling materials used in its devices. Holding in the hand it feels hefty but solid, materials are surprisingly nice. The GUI experience from Touchwiz has improved somewhat, going by a leaked lollipop rom, Samsung is going to finally merge with Android proper. This is my first phablet device admittedly, so I was dubious about my transition from iPhone 5S to this sort of phone. As a result I have found it very difficult to go back to smaller screen devices. The S Pen is a standout feature which really puts other phablets to shame, its nothing ground breaking, however it is something unique. Battery life is superb, removable battery is becoming a unique selling point to Samsung phones. Screen is beautiful, the camera is good but I feel the optics inside the Z3 and Z3 compact do take better images.

Samsung finally got the kick in the balls it deserved and released a steller handset. I would assume its next flagship will be rebranded from the S range to something simpler but also new. It is said that their next flagship will be an all metal affair, if that is the case then a new brand is needed. I think Galaxy should one about to one premium line of handsets, fair play to Sony, LG and HTC They release flagship level devices usually no more than twice a year so as to not dilute the brand (something samsung seems incapable of doing with "Galaxy")

HTC One (M8) especially after it's converted to the Google Play Edition aka Android Lollipop 5.0.1

I'd vote for the Z3 Compact. Great value for the sheer amount of useful tech they've shoehorned into it.

Wanted to like the HTC One M8, Moto X and Ascend Mate 7 more than I did but they fell short for varying reasons. Echo an earlier poster that it's been a bit of a bland year, OnePlus shenanigans and Note Edge aside. Probably why (for me) unexceptional devices which do most things to an acceptable level at a lower tier price (Z3 compact, Moto G etc) are worth a mention.

Note 4 was the best of the year IMHO even though I've no desire to own one.

Yep has to be the Z3C every time - iPhone 6 eat your heart out. Twice the phone at half the price.
