Have I? A lorry lost control, the driver is being treated in hospital, 6 people have died, at least 7 seriously injured, countless others traumatised by what they have seen and heard, it's shocking - breaking - news that people are struggling to take in and you are speculating about fat people and heart attacks, are you not? At this stage?

Maybe it is just me but that strikes me as incredibly insensitive and inappropriate.

Children climb trees and fall down breaking their arm.......should we ban tree-climbing?
Some women totter round on 4inch high heels, fall and break their ankles....should we ban stilettos?
A car hits a patch of black ice and crashes...should we ban all cars from the roads when there is ice around?
Break a leg when going ice-skating? Ban rugby in case of injuries. All drinking glasses to be made of plastic? How about opening tins of beans...all those sharp edges? Ban people from crossing the road except at designated crossing points?

Whether we are inside or outside our homes, we are always at risk of an accident, and that includes a sudden severe illness. Not everything in our lives can or should be made safer - without risk and curiosity we would not be human. Fine - investigate accidents to see if there is a fault but most accidents are caused by human error and you can hardly ban all humans

What upsets me after incidents like this is that Cameron, Salmond, Sturgeon et al TWEET their condolences to show how much they need to be seen to be caring.

There can barely be a worse tragedy so close to Xmax. RIP.

This is very sad my thoughts are with the friends and family of those who sadly passed away and the casualties. Here's hoping for a swift and speedy recovery for all of those recovering and who saw what happened.

I don't go to Glasgow that often, I'd have been more likely to be in Edinburgh but thankfully, of course me and my close family weren't in the city, so we haven't been personally affected but its very sad and unsettling, given it ended by Queen Street station, where trains from my town go to (if you take the Glasgow service, of course). My sincerest thoughts go to those affected - I can only imagine how scary it must have been. I've been watching coverage of the news about it for a while and just thought I should perhaps check in.

To be honest, I find your determination to vilify another poster because their reaction doesn't match yours, insensitive and inappropriate.

It's a normal reaction to tragedy to think how it might be avoided in the future. Just because you have a different point of view, or disagree with specific points, doesn't mean you get to be nasty to other posters.

Obviously, one measure would to be ban those who are high risk from driving.”

Any other medical/physical conditions you want included, while you're busy banning innocent people from driving?

This is a terrible accident.

I'll probably be shot down for saying this but can I just say how sorry I feel for the driver. If he pulls through this the guilt he will feel will be unbearable.

Yeah, must admit I'm a bit about the combative, finger wagging nature of some of these posts - we shouldn't be admonishing each other for not conforming to some requisite response.

I thought that too, yeah - and the rest of his crew, but mainly him.

I don't think I have speculated about fat people.

I see nothing wrong with speculating about it being a heart attack as a number of news outlets have made similar speculation.

If someone wanted to cause maximum carnage on the streets of Glasgow with a bin lorry they could have chosen a far easier and more crowded street than that.

I don't imagine anyone would shoot you down for that - I feel the same. It sounds as though this was a tragic accident (despite what some clowns have been saying on this thread).
If he pulls through I'd imagine he'll be overwhelmed with guilt. His family too. Poor guy.

Anything that makes people a danger to others.

My list would be huge to be honest.

Thousands die on our streets and roads because of unsuitable drivers causing accidents.

I feel sorry for the driver too.

Something similar happened where I live many years ago when a bus hit a queue of people at a bus station. Two people died. The driver finished work and died a couple of years later. Apparently he never got over the guilt.

It's just such an awful thing to happen.

What would you rather they do? Say nothing? Because that would be really appropriate wouldn't it?

Reading this thread, one might be excused for imagining this was some kind of terrorist act, and that it would have been so much better if it hadn't have happened so near to Christmas. The relatives are not likely to give a stuff about the date.
The likelihood is that this is one of many similar events that happen all the time up and down the country, most of which end without serious injury. Tragically, this a
was in a very busy street.

Tbh I did think the same and almost didn't post it. Several times. It wasn't something I had any intention of dragging out - it would have been left at that - because I agree this is really neither the time or the place.
