ETA: the reason I mentioned the crass tweets was because it raised a topic I was interested in. What else is there to say about what happened in Glasgow?? What 'words' could I possibly have for the victims that would make the slightest bit of difference? To imply that I don't care about what happened is way off the mark.

Now think of the weight of that truck against that of an average saloon car.”

IF the driver became unconscious for whatever reason there is always the possibility that he did so with his foot on the accelerator, which would account for the speed that the truck was reportedly doing and how it continued after hitting other cars..... A friend of mine died at the wheel of his car as he reversed out of a car park and his car went through a stone wall before coming to a stop when he went into a ditch.

And that's why sensible people like us stay off Twatter, if people are to be prosecuted for sick comments and jokes then the court system is going to grind to a halt, I'm pretty sure the antics of a sad sick Pratt on Twatter is the last thing the victims friends and family are thinking of this December night.

I'm not sure baiting other posters is adding anything to the discussion, tbh.

I'm not even going to respond to that. It has literally nothing to do with what happened in Glasgow today. If you want to start another thread then feel free but this thread is certainly neither the time or the place.

BIB is exactly that. Those bin wagons weigh something in the region of 30 ton, a car around 1 ton. That the car which crashed in my local town centre didn't kill more people was nothing short of a miracle.

I really feel for the truck driver as he has to live with this though obviously a) he isn't at fault and b) it's highly unlikely he will ever drive again.

You don't need to respond to it, I already know the answer. And I DO agree that this thread is not the time or the place so I bid you goodnight.

I cannot abide these idiots on twitter. Having said that it is in poor taste and these sort of comments do end up is people being prosecuted. The people who put these comments up do need to realise they are not just talking to their pals. Personally I don't see it as a prosecution matter but he is plainly a fool and people do need to learn that they are not all Frankie Boyle or Stephen Fry.

Is it practical to implement the same technology to prevent accidents in trains I.e the handle' to industrial vehicles such as bin lorries ect?

Not really. Simple enough to isolate the electrics and power but then you have the steering and braking to contend with which relies on electrics to function safely. On a train it's different as the thing is already on rails so will stay there. A vehicle can't.

Thanks for the reply, I changed the original wording as I felt it was insensitive.

No need to as it's the correct term anyway. I certainly didn't find it insensitive and actually the connection never entered my head when i first read your post tbh.

As his purported address is all over Twitter, I don't think it will be the Police he is frightened of. Stupid man. However, there were a couple of moronic 'jokes' on the very first page of this thread - these posts were quite swiftly removed by the mods.

So sad for all the families involved. What must this driver be feeling now if the reports are true that he passed out at the wheel?.

The fool on Twitter proves that modern tech can bite you in the arse big time, as this twit in days gone by would have said this "joke" to a couple of mates down the pub and in a couple of minutes it will have been forgotten about. Now his inane and stupid remark will follow him around like a bad smell.

That's as much out of order as the moron joker. As if the Police don't already have enough on their hands without having to deal with potential vigilante mob justice fruit loops.

Absolutely awful. Weird really but the first thought that passed through my mind when i first heard the news was "God i hope the driver didn't survive". Then when i heard later he had i felt real deep sympathy for the bloke. I don't know how you 'deal' with something like this but somehow he's got to cope with it for the rest of his life.

Horrible.

Exactly. What is equally worrying is that very few of those re-tweeting addresses can have no idea that it is even the correct address or who else may be living there or even the correct person. They seem unable to understand cause and effect. I find Twitter is often a very unpleasant place to be and full of speculation and misinformation, intentional or otherwise. People moan about the moderation on DS but the mods do generally deal with the idiots quickly and effectively.

It's shocking what happened. I don't mean this in a grim way but I was surprised that at the amount of photos that appeared on Twitter none of them contained anybody injured or dead, i'm not saying that it wasn't a bad place to be but naturally you think those pictures are going to appear online and so far none have.

Or perhaps people have handed their phones into the poluce to have the images analysed, or people were too shocked for the most part to film it/take photos.
Or maybe people are not as ghoulish as you.

I'm not a Twitter user and don't know precisely how it works but from the bits i've seen posted, that alone is enough to put me off. What you have said is what i was trying to explain to another poster earlier on. Its seems to be wide open to abuse here and almost anyone and everyone can be targeted. Folk see a single man with little kids and all of a sudden he's a 'paedo' or a 'pervert'.

Twitter just seems to be a modern day 'tittle tattle' tool.....but a very dangerous one.

Twitter seems to fall into two halves :

The good e.g I follow several archaeological and astronomical news sites all of which provide relevant, literate, and sound information. Reputable news sites, organisations, and information sites are all ok as are those of reasonable people.

The bad : the ones which attract moronic, foul-mouthed, illiterate, and ignorant comments. If you can stay away from those then Twitter is generally ok.

The problem arises when a situation such as the bin lorry disaster occurs. It quickly descends from being 'information' to misinformation (genuine or otherwise), speculation and the moronic 'jokes'. Once something is tweeted, no matter how malicious it is, it can be quickly retweeted and thus becomes basically impossible to remove. As you say..a dangerous tool, sadly
